About me
There may be times in your life when things become overwhelming or confusing, where relatively small problems become real obstacles and you may find yourself really suffering inside that you cannot explain or come to terms with. Taking the first steps to meet with someone who may be able to help is just the beginning but more often than not the most challenging step to take...
I am dedicated, experienced and professional in my work, I work hard to support you to enable you to see things more clearly & to focus on feelings, experiences and behaviour with an end goal to facilitate positive change and a sense of empowerment.
In a safe and confidential way, I can bring about a new awareness, an understanding of yourself and any issues. Over the years, I have worked in a variety and range of situations, using my skills and experience to help others through periods of difficulty, self-development and transformation.
My journey has been far from easy. I come from a large and complex family background that has given me first hand experience of life's complications and I witnessed severe depression & mental health, high levels of anxiety, alcoholism and suicide, as I was growing up. I am now in my mid 50's and have my own family that has thrown up a wide range of challenges and complications, as modern life and the pressures family and society can only do.
Training, qualifications & experience
Some time ago I realised that what I had witnessed was fairly common in today's society and I became committed to supporting others through difficult times, using both my first hand experience, professional methods, practices and qualifications.
I have an Advanced Diploma in Integrative Counselling and am a Member of National Counselling Society. This means I adhere to a professional and ethical framework and am regularly supervised.
In addition, I have taken a range of courses to include;
- Understanding Abusive Relationships,
- Mindfulness,
- Neuro Linguistic Programming,
- Working with Trauma & Disassociation,
- Safe Guarding Young People and Vulnerable Adults.
I am fully insured and have a clear DBS.
My career has included working in the Prison Service HMP Exeter as a family liaison officer, helping to support the families of prisoners through difficult periods and in particular with the absence of a family member. I have also played a part in the NHS, working in two departments; The Gender & Sexual Medicine Clinic and The Depression and Anxiety clinic.
Five years ago I worked at The Zone in Plymouth, which is the largest youth organisation in Devon, supporting 13 to 25 year olds through difficult times involving issues such as;
- Bulimia
- Self-Harm
- Depression
- Suicide Tendencies
- Low Self-Esteem
- Bullying
- Isolation
- dealing with and living with ADHA and Autism.
There after I worked at Kingsbridge Community College for 2.5 years, supporting 11 to 18 year olds
I am now running my private practice form The Hen House, Coombe Farm, Kingsbridge and support a range of people, of all ages, through complex issues, such as;
- OCD
- Abuse
- Domestic Violence
- Panic Attacks
- Hopelessness
- Sexual Abuse
- Body Confidence
- Rejection
- Trauma.
- Dissociative Identity Disorder
- Relationship issues
- Dealing with the effects of Covid 19 - past and present
I am very aware of today's life pressures that are born from social media activities and the sense that one has to conform.
I am committed in my work to making sure that you are comfortable and reassured enough to share some of your most difficult challenges and issues with me and I strive at all times to assist you to improve your circumstance, have a more fulfilling and rewarding life.
