About me

When can Psychotherapy help?
At some point in our lives, many of us experience periods where we feel overwhelmed, anxious, or unsure where to turn.

Anxiety and depression can sometimes arise from past traumatic experiences, relationship difficulties or feelings of confusion and loneliness that are difficult to understand. You may be struggling with emotions and unable to see a way forward. Perhaps you have experienced traumatic events in childhood or suffer from Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) that continues to affect your life through intrusive memories, flashbacks or overwhelming emotions.

Psychotherapy can help you move forward by gaining a deeper understanding of your thoughts, feelings and behaviours. I aim to support you in developing the skills and resources needed to cope more effectively with difficult emotions, distressing thoughts, flashbacks and nightmares.

Through therapy, you can begin to recognise patterns and negative beliefs that influence your moods and behaviours. This awareness allows you to develop healthier coping strategies and more constructive ways of responding to life's challenges.

Where appropriate, therapy may include Cognitive Behaviour Therapy (CBT) or Eye Movement Desensitisation Reprocessing (EMDR), which is an evidence-based therapy that can help process traumatic experiences and reduce their emotional impact.

I offer confidential adult therapy (16+), regardless of your sexual orientation, cultural background, gender or personal outlook. Sessions can be conducted face-to-face or online. I provide support for a wide range of difficulties including..

Depression
Generalized Anxiety Disorder (GAD)
Panic Attacks
Divorce and Separation
Isolation and Loneliness
Lack of Confidence and Self-esteem
Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD)
Phobias
Relationship & Sexual Issues
Anger Management
Complex Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD)

These problems can be personally overwhelming and self-limiting, which can affect your health and day to day wellbeing.

Throughout Therapy the aim is to provide a confidential, supportive and trusted environment to enable you to explore your issues.

You will be supported as you gain positive thinking and a new perspective on your situation. You will not be given advice and most certainly will not be judged in any way.

You will be heard with respect and acceptance as you try to move forward at your own pace during painful and difficult issues.

With support and understanding your principles and decisions, along with your right to make your own choices will be honoured as you resolve your particular problems.

Sessions are generally one hour per week for a mutually agreed period and depending on what type of therapy is involved. However, according to your circumstances a flexible times can be adapted.

Training, qualifications & experience

I am a qualified Psychotherapist with a private practice near Minehead, Somerset. I hold a BSc (Hons) Degree in Psychology, together with Professional Diplomas in Cognitive Behaviour Therapy (CBT) and Eye Movement Desensitization Reprocessing (EMDR). Widely used in the treatment of anxiety, trauma and emotional difficulties

COGNITIVE BEHAVIOUR THERAPY (CBT)

CBT is an evidence-based therapy for a wide spectrum of conditions, including anxiety, depression, obsessive compulsive disorder, eating disorders, low self-esteem and confidence, anger, sexual problems and phobias, to name but a few.

Cognitive Behaviour Therapy (CBT) works by exploring the relationship between thoughts, feelings and behaviours. Through discussion and practical techniques, CBT helps individuals develop skills to challenge and change unhelpful thinking patterns, which in turn can lead to positive changes in emotions and behaviours.

EYE MOVEMENT DESENSITISATION REPROCESSING (EMDR)

Eye Movement Desensitisation Reprocessing (EMDR) is a highly effective therapy used primarily for Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) and other distressing memories, including trauma and emotional, physical, and sexual abuse.

EMDR works by utilising the brain's natural ability to process and heal from traumatic experiences. During EMDR therapy, eye movements similar to those experienced during Rapid Eye Movement (REM) sleep are recreated by asking the client to follow a light bar across their visual field or listen to headphones.

During sessions, clients may notice changes in thoughts, images, emotions and physical sensations as the brain begins to process previously unresolved memories. This linking of related experiences can often lead to significant and sometimes rapid improvements, reducing symptoms such as flashbacks, nightmares and emotional distress.

Both CBT and EMDR therapy can be provided face-to-face or online.

I offer discounted therapy rates to Military Veterans, Fire Fighters, Paramedics, Police, GPs and Hospital staff

Registered / Accredited

Being registered/accredited with a professional body means an individual must have achieved a substantial level of training and experience approved by their member organisation.

BACP
British Association for Counselling & Psychotherapy (BACP)

BACP is one of the UK’s leading professional bodies for counselling and psychotherapy with around 60,000 members. The Association has several different categories of membership, including Student Member, Individual Member, Registered Member MBACP, Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Accred) and Senior Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Snr Acccred). Registered and accredited members are listed on the BACP Register, which shows that they have demonstrated BACP’s recommended standards for training, proficiency and ethical practice. The BACP Register was the first register of psychological therapists to be accredited by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA). Accredited and senior accredited membership are voluntary categories for members who choose to undertake a rigorous application and assessment process to demonstrate additional standards around practice, training and supervision. Individual members will have completed an appropriate counselling or psychotherapy course and started to practise, but they won’t appear on the BACP Register until they've demonstrated that they meet the standards for registration. Student members are still in the process of completing their training. All members are bound by the BACP Ethical Framework and a Professional Conduct Procedure.

The Accredited Register Scheme was set up in 2013 by the Department of Health (DoH) as a way to recognise organisations that hold voluntary registers which meet certain standards. These standards are set by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA).

This therapist has indicated that they belong to an Accredited Register.

ADOLESCENT AND ADULT AUTISM ASSESSMENTS AND DIAGNOSIS

I provide Autistic Spectrum Assessments for Adults (16+), using diagnostic tools recognised by the National Institute for Health Clinical Excellence (NICE), using the Autistic Diagnostic Observation Schedule - Second Edition ADOS-2 and the Autism Diagnostic Interview - Revised (ADI-R), which are widely recognised as the GOLD STANDARD diagnostic tools for Autistic Spectrum Disorder.

Why are they considered the Gold Standard?

The ADOS and ADI are regarded as the gold standard because they have been rigorously developed, standardised and clinically validated through extensive research.

Clinicians administering these assessments undergo specialised training and reliability testing to ensure that they are delivered and coded accurately.

The combination of both tools provides a comprehensive and reliable diagnostic process as they assess autism from two important perspectives. Direct Observation of Social Communication, Interaction, and Behaviour.

Developmental History obtained through a detailed interview focusing on early development, communication, social interaction and behavioural patterns. Using both assessments together allows clinicians to gain a thorough understanding of an individual's developmental history and current presentation, supporting accurate and clinically robust diagnosis.

Assessments typically involve a 6-8 hour diagnostic process conducted over several sessions.  Assessments are carried out face to face in private clinics in Exford (Minehead) or Exeter.
