About me

In psychoanalytic psychotherapy, the therapist and client look together at the circumstances and patterns that have brought the client to the point of coming for help. These can be events and relational issues that might have begun in earliest childhood, and seem insignificant, but over time can exert an effect that might send us off-course, like the pressure of sunlight on a spaceship.

I think psychotherapy is exciting, but it can also be very difficult, because often a deeper understanding of what is wrong is painful. It might involve deciding to change actual circumstances, or finding a way to see things differently, and however much most of us profess to want to change, usually we don't really want to.

The therapist's role is not to advise or judge, because we don't sit like sages with all the answers. Our role is to explore, with you, and see what we find.

Psychoanalytic theory, for example the work of Freud, Melanie Klein, Donald Winnicott and Jacques Lacan, underpins this kind of therapy, but it doesn't generally have an overt presence in the room.

Training, qualifications & experience

I am trained as a psychoanalytic psychotherapist, and see my earlier degrees in English Literature as pertinent and useful to my later training.

I trained and qualified with the Cambridge Society for Psychotherapy, and am a full member of the UKCP.

I am also a writer, and have a background in English and American Literature. I have degrees from Oxford University and St Andrews University, and since those long-ago university days, I have lived in New York and Cambridge.

UKCP
UK Council for Psychotherapy (UKCP)

The UK Council for Psychotherapy (UKCP) is a leading professional body for the education, training and regulation of psychotherapists and psychotherapeutic counsellors. Its register is accredited by the government's Professional Standards Authority.

As part of its commitment to protect the public, it works to improve access to psychotherapy, to support and disseminate research, to improve standards and to respond effectively to complaints against its members.

UKCP standards cover the range of different psychotherapies. Registration is obtained by training or accrediting with one of its member organisations, or by holding a European Certificate in Psychotherapy. Accredited by the Professional Standards Authority.
