About me
I am an Adlerian counsellor, available to work with you remotely wherever you may be in the UK, online or over the phone.
Adlerian psychotherapy is a positive and active approach to life's difficulties, where client and therapist collaborate. We often look back into the past but only as a means of understanding life and how to move forward. Shifts in thinking about how to tackle your concerns can be achieved at your pace.
With a varied background in languages and communication, sales, well-being and community work, I have good networks both in my home area and throughout the UK, enabling me to highlight organisations providing sustainable support and extra encouragement for when you are out in the world....and, crucially, once therapy has ended.
Once therapy has begun and you feel comfortable and safe to share with me what has been going on for you, we can work out what, or who, might have had an influence on your life. The principle ideas and patterns formed as a result of these influences and which have led you through life can then be gently examined, leading to new more helpful ways of thinking and wider change.
It is possible to learn not to take so much on ourselves. We can learn to let go of what might be someone else's stuff, reclaiming ourselves from shame and blame. We will bring your strengths to the light, even if you are not feeling strong....but it's important to recognise that it takes strength to begin therapy.
As a compassionate and thoughtful therapist, I will respect your life experiences and whatever you choose to share with me. We can look at your early years to understand how you learnt to live - but you hold the key to any exploration and there will be no pressure.
Psycho-education is a frequent feature in my sessions and from time to time I will offer links to reading or videos relevant to our discussions. This extra personal research can often lead to increased insight, as well as build a sense of not being alone. If something has been researched and written about, you can be pretty sure there is a community of people who have experienced it.
I offer a free intro call, important for gauging whether we suit each other. Thereafter, our initial session will present an opportunity to gather some personal details and work through a short assessment regarding what is happening for you, what you feel are your main concerns and any key experiences or health difficulties. We can also establish what outcomes you seek from your therapy.
Training, qualifications & experience
I have a varied study and work background encompassing a degree in Modern Languages, the academic and reference publishing industry, body therapies and the voluntary sector. Although based in the beautiful county of Pembrokeshire, where I was born and bred, I have lived and worked in different parts of the UK.
I am:
- fully-qualified (IIP Dip Adlerian Counselling)
- fully-insured
- a registered member of the BACP (British Association of Counselling & Psychotherapy)
- a member of ASIIP (Adlerian Society & Institute for Individual Psychology)
I adhere to the BACP Ethical Framework and as a counselling professional, I undergo regular supervision.
Member organisations
BACP is one of the UK’s leading professional bodies for counselling and psychotherapy with around 60,000 members. The Association has several different categories of membership, including Student Member, Individual Member, Registered Member MBACP, Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Accred) and Senior Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Snr Acccred).
Registered and accredited members are listed on the BACP Register, which shows that they have demonstrated BACP’s recommended standards for training, proficiency and ethical practice. The BACP Register was the first register of psychological therapists to be accredited by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA).
Accredited and senior accredited membership are voluntary categories for members who choose to undertake a rigorous application and assessment process to demonstrate additional standards around practice, training and supervision.
Individual members will have completed an appropriate counselling or psychotherapy course and started to practise, but they won’t appear on the BACP Register until they've demonstrated that they meet the standards for registration. Student members are still in the process of completing their training.
All members are bound by the BACP Ethical Framework and a Professional Conduct Procedure.
Accredited register membership
The Accredited Register Scheme was set up in 2013 by the Department of Health (DoH) as a way to recognise organisations that hold voluntary registers which meet certain standards. These standards are set by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA).
This therapist has indicated that they belong to an Accredited Register.
