About me

Hello and welcome

My name is Novena-Chanel (No-ve-na-Cha-nel), and I am a registered integrative Counsellor, Counselling Supervisor, Registered Level 2 - Level 5 Counselling Lecturer, Life Coach, Reiki Master, and Yoga Teacher.  I also work as a Media Consultant, Writer and Public Speaker, advising on issues around Childhood Sexual Abuse, Domestic Violence, Race and Identity, Attachment and Family Breakdowns, and Self-Care.

My special interests are Generational trauma, Attachment Therapy and Relationships, Race, Gender and Identity, Survivors of Abuse and Self-Care.

I work from a holistic and therapeutic approach; working with my clients to identify, work through and heal difficult patterns within their lives' and relationships.  I support you in beginning the process of challenging negative thought patterns and circumstances; often breaking unhealthy generational cycles.

My aim is to empower you to realise and work towards your full potential; while building practical and realistic foundations to maintain your desired therapeutic goals, long after our work together ends.

My Background?

I started my journey towards training as a Counsellor in 2005, after running a Youth Organisation where I saw a common theme of neglect, attachment issues and family breakdowns. Being a homeless teen myself, of African and Caribbean heritage, I all so well understood the importance of gaining self-identity, understanding family, cultural, gender, social and political contexts, and healing generational trauma, before becoming, the now, mother of two children.

So, I don’t just talk the talk or rely on theories and textbooks… I have, and do, walk the talk and empathise from a place of knowing, or, seeking to understand.

Why Counselling?

Although some may find talking to family and friends helpful and nurturing, others may find that the close relationships prevent them from being completely open and honest; fearing repercussions, gossip or ridicule.

However, the counselling relationship offers you a safe, confidential and protected space and time; where you are supported in exploring your concerns; given permission to cry when you are hurt, and show anger when you have been let down. It is a professional relationship where your experiences are respected and accepted; regardless of your age, life history, background, thoughts or experience.

Often for some, this will be your first experience of a relationship where you are valued for who you are and what you present, without bias or negative judgement.

You are safe and allowed to be yourself.

What about Counselling or Coaching in the Park/Outdoors?

Walk-Talk Therapy™️

I understand that for some, the constraints of a therapy room may be daunting, and even off putting; so I offer a new and innovative approach of Counselling and Coaching in the Park.

The process of Walk-Talk Therapy™️ highlights the need to continuously move forward, while maintaining a connection with self and our surroundings.

Outdoor Locations: Kennington Park, Slade Gardens, Brockwell Park or Hyde Park (one Lunchtime appointment available per week in Hyde Park).

Online Skype and Zoom Therapy

I also offer Skype and Zoom sessions for those who are housebound or unable to attend regular sessions in-person.

Member organisations

BACP
British Association for Counselling & Psychotherapy (BACP)

BACP is one of the UK’s leading professional bodies for counselling and psychotherapy with around 60,000 members. The Association has several different categories of membership, including Student Member, Individual Member, Registered Member MBACP, Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Accred) and Senior Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Snr Acccred).

Registered and accredited members are listed on the BACP Register, which shows that they have demonstrated BACP’s recommended standards for training, proficiency and ethical practice. The BACP Register was the first register of psychological therapists to be accredited by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA).

Accredited and senior accredited membership are voluntary categories for members who choose to undertake a rigorous application and assessment process to demonstrate additional standards around practice, training and supervision.

Individual members will have completed an appropriate counselling or psychotherapy course and started to practise, but they won’t appear on the BACP Register until they've demonstrated that they meet the standards for registration. Student members are still in the process of completing their training.

All members are bound by the BACP Ethical Framework and a Professional Conduct Procedure.

The Accredited Register Scheme was set up in 2013 by the Department of Health (DoH) as a way to recognise organisations that hold voluntary registers which meet certain standards. These standards are set by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA).
