About me

Hi there, and welcome to my profile.

It can be very scary for those who are experiencing difficult emotions. Not being able to understand or make sense of these feelings can create anxiety and worries.

My name is Nicola and I am lead counsellor and Founding Director at Creative Minds - North Star Counselling CIC. I have over 5 years experience of counselling and my specialist areas include working with children, anxiety and trauma. I understand that it can be extremely difficult for some to verbalise how they feel, especially for children. This is why I have developed a service that offers a creative outlet. By using creativity alongside therapy I have found that more children, adults and young people have been able to express how they feel, explore their emotions and has lead to them being able to talk about their traumas and issues over time.

What I offer

  • psycho-educational/Therapeutic workshops - for children and young people who are having difficulties with their feelings and emotions. These workshops are designed to raise awareness of mental health issues and to teach children how to manage BIG emotions in creative ways.
  • Parent Cafe - a space for parents and carers to offload about their children's mental health difficulties in a relaxed, informal setting. Care givers have the chance to be around others who are in similar situations to develop a support network within the community.
  • One to one counselling - for children, adults and young people aged 4+
  • Training - CPD training for counsellors and other professionals

My aim is to offer support to children, adults, young people and families within the Sunderland and surrounding areas who may be struggling with mental health issues and who may be on lengthy waiting lists for any therapeutic support.

I aim to remove the stigma that is still attached to mental health issues and provide a safe environment for all who attend in order to have the opportunity to be around like minded people, somewhere you feel able to open up about your struggles in hope that you no longer feel alone with your thoughts and feelings.

The workshops i offer focus on things such as traumas, anxiety, low mood, bullying, anger and many other BIG feelings children may find overwhelming. The sessions offer fun and creative ways to learn to understand and make sense of these feelings and develop techniques to use in times of distress. Working creatively allows the individual to express themselves in non verbal ways and opens up the mind to communicate more freely. I aim to boost confidence and self Esteem amongst children, bring the community together, and teach people that it is ok to feel what we feel.

I often hear of the struggles children, adults, young people and families are facing, with lengthy waiting lists from services who are under a lot of prseeure due to the high demand for mental health support. I make it my overall goal to act as a stepping stone and bridge this gap by offering psycho-educational and therapeutic workshops to those who are in need of immediate support, while offering somewhere to access additional support and to hold the individual while they are waiting for more intense appointments such as one to one counselling. Occasionally the workshops will run for FREE when funding is available.

I strongly believe that early intervention is key in reducing the risk of mental health issues developing in later life and that each individual should have access to mental health services without being turned away or made to wait. I currently offer immediate support with zero or limited waiting periods.

The workshops are currently suitable for children aged 6 – 11 years old, however age is a guide only, depending on ability, older or younger children also welcome.

I work alongside a team of 6 counsellors (including myself) who are available to pick up work when I am not.

Member organisations

British Association for Counselling & Psychotherapy

BACP is one of the UK’s largest professional bodies for counselling and psychotherapy. Therapists registered with the Association fall into a number of different membership categories such as Individual Member, Registered Member MBACP and Registered Member MBACP (Accred), each standing for different levels of training and experience. MBACP (Accred) and MBACP (Snr Accred) members have achieved a substantial level of training and experience approved by the Association.

Registered members can be found on the BACP Register, which was the first register to achieve Accredited Voluntary Register status issued by the Professional Standards Authority. Individual Members will have completed an appropriate counselling and/or psychotherapy course and started to practise, but will not appear on the BACP Register until they've progressed to Registered Member MBACP status.

All members are bound by a Code of Ethics & Practice and a Complaints Procedure. Accredited by the Professional Standards Authority.

Further information

Over the last few years, I have seen, and experienced, the frustration from different people around the lack of immediate help in the community when it comes to mental health. Therefore it is my aim to provide a service which enables flexibility and limited, or zero, waiting lists to children, adults, young people and families. I am a strong believer in early intervention to help prevent the point of crisis.

Please feel reassured that there are no commitments after our first point of contact and that you are in control at all times.

If you require any further information, please do not hesitate to get in touch.  If I am unable to answer your call please leave a message with your name and number and I will get back to you as soon as possible.

Thank you for taking the time to have a look through my profile and I look forward to hearing from you.
