About me

Hi, I'm Matt, thank you for reading my profile.

I'm a Chartered and Registered Clinical Psychologist working with adults of all ages who are experiencing psychological difficulties. If you're struggling with anxiety, depression, fears and phobias, trauma, grief, loss and bereavement, work related stress, adjustment to significant life events, parenting stress, family and relationship difficulties, low self-esteem or confidence issues, I can help you to deal more effectively with the challenges that life throws at you, to focus your efforts on the goals and values that are most important and so move towards living the life you want.

We all experience psychological difficulties at some point in our life - it's part of what makes us human. However, we don't have to be overwhelmed by them. With more than 25 years' experience working in the NHS, charity sector, education and independent practice, I have seen the significant benefits that can be achieved by helping people to apply psychological knowledge to all aspects of their lives.

I specialise in Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) which has proved to be effective for a wide range of problems. ACT works by helping you build a life worth living whilst teaching you a set of skills to help you handle painful experiences so they have less impact on influence over you.

I also draw on a range of other evidence based models to develop an agreed plan with you - based on an understanding of your individual needs and circumstances, the difficulties you would like to work on and the outcomes you would like to achieve.

If you would like to better understand and learn effective skills to cope with difficult thoughts and feelings when they show up - skills that you can use in all areas of your life - then get in touch.

I accept self-referrals as well as referrals from GPs and other professionals working in health, education and social care.

I am also registered with the following health insurance providers: AXA, Aviva, BUPA and Vitality.

I am fully insured to practice as an independent psychologist and have an Enhanced DBS certificate.

Appointments can be arranged face to face at premises in Stone or online via Zoom.

Training, qualifications & experience

I completed my psychology degree at Staffordshire University in 1998, was awarded my PhD by Keele University in 2002 and received my Clinical Psychology Doctorate from Birmingham University in 2004.

I am a Chartered Psychologist, a full member of the British Psychological Society Division of Clinical Psychology and am registered as a Clinical Psychologist with the Health and Care Professions Council. I am also a member of the Association for Contextual Behavioural Science.

I am committed to life-long learning and regularly attend further training to continue to develop my skills.

Having worked in the NHS, charity sector, education and independent practice, I have a wealth of experience and a proven track record of developing, delivering and managing highly effective services for children, young people and adults with a wide range of psychological difficulties.

I am a qualified teacher in Higher Education and an Accredited Tutor with The Association for Psychological Therapies with experience of teaching and training students at undergraduate, postgraduate and doctoral level. I regularly supervise Trainee Clinical Psychologists and provide clinical supervision to registered Clinical Psychologists, Nurses and other professions.

I have presented my work at conferences, published research articles in peer reviewed journals and co-authored the book 'Ask a Parenting Expert' which was published internationally by Dorling Kindersley.
