About me
Welcome and thank-you for visiting my profile.
My name is Maria and I am a fully qualified and experienced integrative counsellor and cognitive behavioural therapist based in Sevenoaks in Kent and Horsham in West Sussex and I am also able to offer remote sessions.
Choosing the right therapist for your needs can seem quite a daunting prospect, especially when life already feels overwhelming. I therefore hope to ease your concerns and dispel any fears or myths about what counselling really is.
Whatever problems life brings there are times when we are simply unable to cope and can often feel overwhelmed and alone, even when we have friends and family around us. Choosing to talk about what you are experiencing is a huge step and especially with someone you do not know. However, you can be assured that what you tell me, remains confidential.
Perhaps you have been considering therapy for some time or something specific has happened that you need to talk about. Maybe you are experiencing relationship issues or work related stress and need some clarity away from the problem itself, or perhaps you have suffered from depression or anxiety for a while and just do not want to suffer alone anymore.
I work one-to-one with adults, either on an open-ended basis or for an agreed period of time, with the aim of supporting you through a crisis or to live your life to it's fullest potential, whilst enabling you to make authentic life choices.
Training, qualifications & experience
I hold a post graduate, accredited diploma in Integrative Counselling and am fully registered member of the British Association of Counselling and Psychotherapy (BACP):Registration number:168949.
I also have a post graduate diploma in cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) and am an accredited registered member of the BABCP
How I can help
As an integrative counsellor I am trained in a variety of therapeutic approaches, which means I can tailor your sessions to suit your individual needs. I provide a warm, non-judgmental and safe place for you to explore your thoughts feelings and behaviours and how this may be impacting your life. By working together we can understand how you relate to the world and this increased self-awareness will become your foundation for a happier and more empowered and fulfilling life.
Integrative counselling offers an holistic approach by combining humanistic, psychodynamic and cognitive behavioural therapies. This may sound a little scary but my ethos is that everyone is unique and what is most important is that you are comfortable and safe. In my practice the therapeutic relationship is of paramount importance and I will only work with what is appropriate to you as an individual and at your own pace.
Cognitive Behavioural Therapy is a different type of therapy and can be described as a practical problem solving approach to managing a wide range of psychological, emotional and behavioural problems. CBT provides a highly structured psychological process for identifying, understanding and altering the links between negative thinking, unhelpful behaviours, emotional responses and physiological reactions. CBT is typically a short-term therapy and can draw on the past to learn from those experiences, however CBT focusses on the here and now through problem solving, and developing skills to become your own therapist in the future.

Member organisations
The BABCP is the lead organisation for Cognitive Behavioural Therapy in the UK. Membership is open to anyone with an interest in the practice, theory or development of CBT. BABCP also provides accreditation for CBT therapists. BABCP accredited members adhere to the Standards of Conduct, Performance and Ethics in the Practice of Behavioural and Cognitive Psychotherapies, and are willing to be scrutinised in this adherence as required.
BACP is one of the UK’s leading professional bodies for counselling and psychotherapy with around 60,000 members. The Association has several different categories of membership, including Student Member, Individual Member, Registered Member MBACP, Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Accred) and Senior Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Snr Acccred). Registered and accredited members are listed on the BACP Register, which shows that they have demonstrated BACP’s recommended standards for training, proficiency and ethical practice. The BACP Register was the first register of psychological therapists to be accredited by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA). Accredited and senior accredited membership are voluntary categories for members who choose to undertake a rigorous application and assessment process to demonstrate additional standards around practice, training and supervision. Individual members will have completed an appropriate counselling or psychotherapy course and started to practise, but they won’t appear on the BACP Register until they've demonstrated that they meet the standards for registration. Student members are still in the process of completing their training. All members are bound by the BACP Ethical Framework and a Professional Conduct Procedure.
Accredited register membership
The Accredited Register Scheme was set up in 2013 by the Department of Health (DoH) as a way to recognise organisations that hold voluntary registers which meet certain standards. These standards are set by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA).
This therapist has indicated that they belong to an Accredited Register.
