About me

Psychotherapy is a very individual experience of personal growth.  It may be prompted by current or past difficulties - which may be calling for a re-assessment, but ultimately, improving our capacity to weather storms is what is aimed for.  It may be needed for support at times, or professional help in 'processing' troubling experiences, feelings, etc. and in exploring and enhancing self-understanding, but it is important to always bear in mind the need to develop your capacity to make independent choices as the work progresses.

'Symptoms' often indicate the need to understand their root cause so as best to address the necessary changes. 'Painkillers' may sometimes be necessary but are often not enough. The Human Psyche is complex and relies on a dynamic interplay between itself, the body, and the experience of external reality.  There is always a powerful interplay of internal forces too, often in (at least some degree of) conflict with each other.  We adjust to both external and internal demands by making unconscious compromises (defences) - these can be healthy enough or tip over into jeopardising our further development and we become stuck in 'patterns' which impede a healthier and freer engagement with life and a more satisfactory approach to relationships.

Psychotherapy does not prescribe 'cures' or hand out advice.  A professionally facilitated process helps the individual to explore and reach their own conclusions and make their own decisions. Feeling increasingly aware of oneself, we extend our 'range' to engage with a richer spectrum of experiences, both within ourselves and in the world out there.  This is best accomplished through a careful observation of your unconscious patterns as they manifest in your relationship to yourself, to others, and to your therapist.  Psychotherapy is a process of 'experiential' learning (at many levels simultaneously) and of broadening and deepening of your capacity to make choices over responses to life events and circumstances (attachments, changes, losses, and new directions).

I have been in practice for 15 years and have had the honour and pleasure of successfully helping a range of individuals from a very diverse range of backgrounds in many different circumstances.

Registered / Accredited

Registered / Accredited

Being registered/accredited with a professional body means an individual must have achieved a substantial level of training and experience approved by their member organisation.

BACP
British Association for Counselling & Psychotherapy (BACP)

BACP is one of the UK’s leading professional bodies for counselling and psychotherapy with around 60,000 members. The Association has several different categories of membership, including Student Member, Individual Member, Registered Member MBACP, Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Accred) and Senior Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Snr Acccred).

Registered and accredited members are listed on the BACP Register, which shows that they have demonstrated BACP’s recommended standards for training, proficiency and ethical practice. The BACP Register was the first register of psychological therapists to be accredited by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA).

Accredited and senior accredited membership are voluntary categories for members who choose to undertake a rigorous application and assessment process to demonstrate additional standards around practice, training and supervision.

Individual members will have completed an appropriate counselling or psychotherapy course and started to practise, but they won’t appear on the BACP Register until they've demonstrated that they meet the standards for registration. Student members are still in the process of completing their training.

All members are bound by the BACP Ethical Framework and a Professional Conduct Procedure.
