About me

Life can be a struggle at times, and I guess you're here because you are finding things difficult. Is there something in the past or present that is troubling you? Are you struggling with your mental health, feeling overwhelmed with difficult emotions, experiencing difficulties with your relationships? Or maybe you just feel stuck or lost.

As a qualified UKCP accredited psychotherapist, I can offer you time and a confidential space to talk things through with a caring and trusted professional. I can help you to explore, understand and work through your difficulties. Enabling you to gain awareness, find a new perspective, and help you to feel better equipped to deal with life's challenges.

My training and experience enables me to work with a broad range of issues, life situations, and mental health needs. For instance, but not exclusively: anxiety and panic, depression, low self-esteem, obsessions and compulsions, phobias, difficult or traumatic early experiences, trauma, stress and burnout, work issues, bullying, abuse, relationship difficulties, health issues, sexuality or identity issues, loss and grief. I have worked with people from all walks of life, and I value uniqueness and diversity.

I can provide short term counselling with a specific issue, or to support you through a particular life crisis. I also provide more longer term in-depth psychotherapy.

I can meet with you in person in Stratford-upon-Avon or online.

My approach

My therapeutic approach is integrative, which means I draw upon a range of theories and methods, enabling me to tailor the therapy to your individual needs. I have a down-to-earth style, and offer a warm, non-judgemental and empathic relationship, where you can feel truly heard, understood and accepted.

I strongly believe in the power of relationship in the process towards healing, self-acceptance, and growth. I therefore place great importance on the therapeutic relationship that develops between us, aiming to walk alongside you on your journey to a life of less suffering and more fulfilment.

My belief is that humans are naturally creative, and are constantly adapting to life's challenges. However, our present is often influenced by past experiences, and our ways of being that were once adaptive can become fixed. We can then get stuck in patterns of relating or behaving that may be unhelpful or self-defeating. I can help you to make connections to how your past may be impacting you now. I focus on your whole experience of mind, body, and emotions, to enable you to better understand yourself. Once we know ourselves better, we are then free to choose to accept ourselves, or explore the possibility of change, by trying out new ways of being.

My work is trauma-informed, in that I believe mental distress is the result of what has happened to us, rather than something being wrong with us. I appreciate that mental health labels can be helpful to some people, but my focus will be on working alongside you, in putting together the pieces of your unique life story, and integrating those experiences in a way that is meaningful to you.

I can also offer practical resources in the form of grounding and stabilisation techniques, to help regulate your emotions at times of overwhelm. This can enable you to feel more at ease and connected with yourself, others, and the world around you.

You will notice that I say ‘us’ and ‘we’ when I describe counselling/psychotherapy. This is to show that no one is immune to life struggles, including me. I strongly believe in hope, and that we all have the potential to heal, grow and change.

Initial Contact

If you feel, after looking at my profile that I may be able to help, you can call me or email me in the first instance. We can then have a brief chat about what brings you to therapy, and I can answer any questions you may have. If you then wish to meet, we can arrange a suitable time for an initial session.

I appreciate taking the first step in making contact is daunting, but I can guide you through it, and will take things at your pace.

Professional Membership

I am a member of the UK Council for Psychotherapy and a member of the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy, which means I have committed to the principles and values of good practice set out in the ethical frameworks. I hold a current advanced DBS check and hold relevant insurances.

Training, qualifications & experience

In order to qualify as a psychotherapist, I undertook 4 years of in-depth training, including 450+ hours of supervised clinical practice & 160+ hours of therapy. I have an MSc in Integrative Counselling & Psychotherapy and an Advanced Diploma in Psychotherapy Studies from Birmingham Newman university.

I have always held a special interest in psychology and mental health. Prior to training as a psychotherapist I worked in the public sector, in social and mental health care for over 20 years, most of which as a senior mental health practitioner.

I have an MA in Social Work from Leicester university, a Post Qualifying Award in Mental Health Social Work, and a BSc Degree in Psychology from Coventry university. I bring all my knowledge and experience to my work, and have a commitment to lifelong learning, in keeping up to date through continuing professional development.

Member organisations

Registered / Accredited

Registered / Accredited

Being registered/accredited with a professional body means an individual must have achieved a substantial level of training and experience approved by their member organisation.

UKCP
UK Council for Psychotherapy (UKCP)

The UK Council for Psychotherapy (UKCP) is a leading professional body for the education, training and regulation of psychotherapists and psychotherapeutic counsellors. Its register is accredited by the government's Professional Standards Authority.

As part of its commitment to protect the public, it works to improve access to psychotherapy, to support and disseminate research, to improve standards and to respond effectively to complaints against its members.

UKCP standards cover the range of different psychotherapies. Registration is obtained by training or accrediting with one of its member organisations, or by holding a European Certificate in Psychotherapy. Accredited by the Professional Standards Authority.

BACP
British Association for Counselling & Psychotherapy (BACP)

BACP is one of the UK’s leading professional bodies for counselling and psychotherapy with around 60,000 members. The Association has several different categories of membership, including Student Member, Individual Member, Registered Member MBACP, Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Accred) and Senior Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Snr Acccred).

Registered and accredited members are listed on the BACP Register, which shows that they have demonstrated BACP’s recommended standards for training, proficiency and ethical practice. The BACP Register was the first register of psychological therapists to be accredited by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA).

Accredited and senior accredited membership are voluntary categories for members who choose to undertake a rigorous application and assessment process to demonstrate additional standards around practice, training and supervision.

Individual members will have completed an appropriate counselling or psychotherapy course and started to practise, but they won’t appear on the BACP Register until they've demonstrated that they meet the standards for registration. Student members are still in the process of completing their training.

All members are bound by the BACP Ethical Framework and a Professional Conduct Procedure.
