About me

***Online and telephone sessions only until further notice***

Welcome.

We all have times in our lives when things don't go the way we expect, plan or want them to. It could be because of something that happened in the past, is happening now or that you think might happen in the future.

Whatever it is that has brought you consider counselling, I can provide you the necessary space and time away from everyone else, to try to figure things out. I will do my best to help you cope with whatever you are going through.

With experience in many areas and an established practice, I offer you a warm, honest, accepting and down-to-earth approach. Providing you with a quiet, homely and relaxed space in a private therapy room, together we can look at whatever it is that is troubling you, finding a balance that is right for you and work towards finding a way through whatever it is that you are currently struggling with.

All sessions are relaxed and non-clinical. My aim is to make you feel at home and as comfortable as possible. If you struggle with the idea of face-to-face counselling, or for any reason you can't make it into Darlington, perhaps online video counselling would be an option for you, from the comfort of wherever you want to be.

I'm passionate about personal development, and would love to work with you to help you understand yourself, so that you can grow and develop in a way that feels right for you. You may recognise a new beginning, find a 'new normal' or discover a new balance for your life. Counselling can be challenging, but more importantly it can be empowering, enlightening and life-changing. I will support you all the way.

Face to face counselling (currently unavailable)

What you receive will be one-to-one, confidential counselling sessions in a safe, quiet, private therapy room in Darlington town centre. Sessions are relaxed and my aim is to make you feel at home and as comfortable as possible.

Counselling via Zoom

In addition to face to face counselling, I offer counselling through Zoom. I much prefer to meet with you face to face as I believe it to be much more beneficial to you, but I understand it may not be easy for you. You may not live nearby, you may not have transport or it could be that you struggle with childcare.

EMIPlus therapy

I offer EMIPlus therapy (Eye Movement Integration Plus), which is a unique and highly effective way of working with traumatic memories. This can be carried out as part of a course of counselling or as a stand-alone treatment.

Traumatic experiences are accompanied by strong negative emotions. EMIPlus works by incorporating eye movement along with breathing techniques and can used to un-couple the emotional pain from troublesome memories such as traumatic events, embarrassing moments and scary experiences. If you'd like to know more about this, please just get in touch.

(Please note, EMIPlus cannot be carried out via Zoom)

Experience

New Balance Counselling as owner and counsellor
The majority of work I do currently is taking referrals privately from people from a wide variety of backgrounds and with a huge range of issues.
I also take referrals from various employers and occupational health companies who offer and pay for sessions for staff members. If you have any questions regarding this, please don't hesitate to contact me for further details.

Chapters Counselling & Training as a counsellor
I also currently contribute to the counselling service offered by Chapters. Here I am involved with counselling students who are currently training to become counsellors themselves, private clients and also clients from EAP schemes.

Alliance Psychological Services as a children's counsellor
I was part of a team of therapists working with children in schools providing a targeted service that aims to improve the emotional health and well-being of children.

Rape and Sexual Abuse Counselling Centre, Darlington as a women's counsellor
I worked here as a volunteer counsellor, supporting women who have survived childhood sexual abuse, sexual harassment, domestic violence and rape.
I trained here to become a facilitator of the 'Freedom Programme', which is group programme for anyone who has experienced domestic violence.

Gay Advice Durham & Darlington as a counsellor
I worked here as a counsellor, supporting LGBT men and women who were struggling either themselves or with family around issues relating to sexual orientation, preference, gender and more.

Darlington College as a student counsellor
I worked here as a student support advisor and then as a counsellor with students going through difficult times with issues including relationship problems, self esteem and confidence issues, stress and anxiety.

Place2Be as a children's counsellor
I worked here as a volunteer counsellor in a Primary school. This involved me working therapeutically with children on a one-to-one basis using play therapy techniques, helping them learn how to express themselves and achieve their potential. The children I worked with had emotional issues or behavioural problems.

Having been trained in play and creative therapy with children, I have found that working in a creative way with adults as part of counselling can be extremely beneficial too.

Member organisations

BACP

British Association for Counselling & Psychotherapy

BACP is one of the UK’s largest professional bodies for counselling and psychotherapy. Therapists registered with the Association fall into a number of different membership categories such as Individual Member, Registered Member MBACP and Registered Member MBACP (Accred), each standing for different levels of training and experience. MBACP (Accred) and MBACP (Snr Accred) members have achieved a substantial level of training and experience approved by the Association.

Registered members can be found on the BACP Register, which was the first register to achieve Accredited Voluntary Register status issued by the Professional Standards Authority. Individual Members will have completed an appropriate counselling and/or psychotherapy course and started to practise, but will not appear on the BACP Register until they've progressed to Registered Member MBACP status.

All members are bound by a Code of Ethics & Practice and a Complaints Procedure. Accredited by the Professional Standards Authority.

Accredited register membership

British Association for Counselling & Psychotherapy

Accredited Register Scheme

The Accredited Register Scheme was set up in 2013 by the Department of Health (DoH) as a way to recognise organisations that hold voluntary registers which meet certain standards. These standards are set by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA).

This therapist has indicated that they belong to an Accredited Register.
