About me

Hello and welcome.

I'm wondering if you are feeling a little bewildered and in need of reassurance in your journey to find the right therapist for you, or members of your family. I hope I can help you with this process.

I am experienced, qualified and registered to work with children, young people, adults, families and groups experiencing various issues and challenges.

Some of my work has been with people who have incurable/terminal illnesses or any impending loss such as redundancies, separation, divorce, miscarriage, loss of a any significant role, adoption and those separated by someone being in prison.

I facilitate small bereavement support groups (face to face) working with young people or adults who have experienced a significant loss i.e. death of a family member, friend, colleague (anyone). I work with any cause of death.  Groups are no more than 9 people and provide a safe and gentle way of sharing our stories, expressing our grief, confusion, anger, despair and happy memories too. The shared group experience will gently help us to explore ways of learning to live with our loss, slowly adapting, finding ways to gently look ahead. I will bring  to the group many years of experience working with anticipatory grief or any bereavement, such as sudden and traumatic deaths including suicides, murders and overdoses.

When working with individual clients, in our working together, I will show you kindness, respect and understanding. We will face any challenges and powerful emotions with a trusting and gentle way of working. We will work in a way that focusses on helping you feel safe and comfortable. Together, we will explore ways to slowly unpack your experiences and safely unravel your stories. Alongside one another, we will reflect upon your life with understanding and acceptance; a life lived and your life yet to be lived. This can be done through talking or using methods of creative communication and expression such as art and other forms of creative media; whatever feels safe and helpful for you.

If you are a parent or carer looking for a therapist to work with your child or young person I understand this maybe a very anxious time for you. I do offer family sessions. With your child or young person, they and I will work alongside one another and figure out a collaborative, comfortable and safe way forward. I will work at their pace with their own individual experience of life and with whatever issue is troubling them.

I offer creative ways to aid communication and understanding, including sand tray work, puppets, toys, specialised books and communication tools. This can be fun too!

I work with many life challenges and issues, so please do feel free to contact me to ask any questions you may have about how I could help you. I'll be happy to chat and help put you at ease and discuss the possibility of referring yourself, a child or young person. I'm glad to help.

Training, qualifications & experience

My qualified career began working with children from new born to 11 yrs. I have worked almost for 40 years including placement based university courses.

1984. Qualified as a nursery nurse. Trained to work with children from 0-11 yrs. National Nursery Examination Board (NNEB). York College.

1992. Certificate in Counselling. York St John University.

1998 Diploma of High Education. Social Work. Leeds Metropolitan University. Qualified and registered social worker.

1998 Member of Social Work England. Current.

1999 BA Professional Studies in Social Work. Leeds Metropolitan University.

2007 Post Graduate Certificate in Child Care Studies. Social Work England. York University.

2014 onwards registered member of the British Association of Counsellors and Psychotherapists.  (MBACP).

2016 Postgraduate Diploma with Merit in Counselling. York St John University.

My career has been based on working with many different people in various settings and communities such as seldom heard groups, including those with disabilities, BAME communities and some work with the LBGTQ+ community.

I began working with children in the mid 1980's whilst employed with a local authority, helping parents who are struggling for many reasons to care for and parent the children. Part of my role enabled me to work alongside an addictions service, slowly and gently building helpful and supportive relationships with parents to help them care for their children. I also supported mothers in a women's prison who cared for their small children in a mother and baby unit, up to 18 mths old.

Latterly, as a qualified and registered social worker (27 yrs.) and qualified and registered counsellor (7 yrs.) I have specialised working within the field of serious illness, bereavement and any form of loss, including working for Local Authorities, Barnardo's (West Yorkshire) as a therapeutic social worker, Saint Michaels Hospice (Harrogate) as Head of Bereavement, developing a community bereavement support service for children, young people and adults and finally at St Leonards Hospice York, as Therapeutic Bereavement Service Coordinator for children, young people and adults.

Member organisations

BACP
British Association for Counselling & Psychotherapy (BACP)

BACP is one of the UK’s leading professional bodies for counselling and psychotherapy with around 60,000 members. The Association has several different categories of membership, including Student Member, Individual Member, Registered Member MBACP, Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Accred) and Senior Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Snr Acccred).

Registered and accredited members are listed on the BACP Register, which shows that they have demonstrated BACP’s recommended standards for training, proficiency and ethical practice. The BACP Register was the first register of psychological therapists to be accredited by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA).

Accredited and senior accredited membership are voluntary categories for members who choose to undertake a rigorous application and assessment process to demonstrate additional standards around practice, training and supervision.

Individual members will have completed an appropriate counselling or psychotherapy course and started to practise, but they won’t appear on the BACP Register until they've demonstrated that they meet the standards for registration. Student members are still in the process of completing their training.

All members are bound by the BACP Ethical Framework and a Professional Conduct Procedure.

Accredited register membership

British Association for Counselling & Psychotherapy
Accredited Register Scheme

The Accredited Register Scheme was set up in 2013 by the Department of Health (DoH) as a way to recognise organisations that hold voluntary registers which meet certain standards. These standards are set by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA).

This therapist has indicated that they belong to an Accredited Register.
