About me

Hello and a warm welcome to one and all. I'm Jane, a BACP accredited and NHS experienced compassionate and growth-focussed counsellor, trauma/EMDR therapist and supervisor. Sessions are in person in Surbiton or online to any area in the UK. I embody an, accepting, non-judgemental and individualised approach combining varied modalities to offer expert and effective therapy, supporting you through times of distress or encouraging personal growth. I passionately believe painful childhood or adult experiences can be healed with the right professional and benevolent support.

May I commend you on taking the first step in reaching out, as for many of us the thought of engaging in therapy to address the difficulties we are facing can seem frightening and out of our comfort zone.

How can counselling help?

There are many reasons for seeking therapy and as an experienced counsellor, I have found that these reasons are often incredibly painful. Perhaps you are holding onto distress from a difficult childhood, grieving the loss of a meaningful relationship, or wondering what your purpose is. You may have been hiding your pain for a while and managing daily life well but inside, feel exhausted and alone from putting on a mask. As your therapist, I can help you to make sense of the feelings experienced and enable you to see difficulties in a more manageable way.

My approach

I take an integrative approach to counselling, blending psychodynamic, humanistic, and cognitive behavioural therapies and incorporating trauma informed theory to support clients who have lived through distressing experiences. I champion a relational approach, as research shows a trusting relationship between client and counsellor is the most important factor for effective therapy. I will witness, validate and empathise with your unique lived experience and support you with the daily challenges of being an imperfect human. Progress is the goal, not perfection.  If impacted by distressing memories or suffering with PTSD, I am EMDR Academy trained to offer Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing (EMDR) to process trauma and find freedom from flashbacks and triggers.

Please do get in touch, I'm very easy to talk to! No question is 'silly' and I offer a free 20-minute phone call to discuss your unique requirements with no obligation to proceed with therapy.

Where am I?

I offer short to long term therapy, accessible to all from a confidential counselling room in Surbiton, online from a virtual platform or via telephone. With the rise in online working due to the pandemic, I undertook specialist training to provide effective virtual and telephone counselling.

Help is available, change is possible, so take that step and reach out, your emotional wellbeing is so very important.

Training, qualifications & experience

Experience and NHS Counselling Service Lead

I previously supported NHS key workers throughout and after the pandemic as a Counselling Service Lead which has given me intensive experience of working with depression, anxiety, burnout, anger difficulties, compassion fatigue, chronic stress, trauma and complex trauma, PTSD and bereavement. My varied and extensive counselling experience includes working within several not-for-profit agencies supporting a variety of people with mild to more severe mental health challenges and women-specific charities throughout Surrey and London, as well as in private practice. I have supported many men and women with a vast array of challenges; from survivors of sexual assault to bereavement of a loved one and redundancy.  I specialise in childhood emotional, verbal or sexual abuse, child/adult trauma and narcissistic abuse and the impact this has on the present day. Often resulting in loneliness, depression, anxiety, co-dependent behaviours, low self-esteem, low confidence, parenting struggles, and difficulties with close, intimate relationships with family, friends or romantic partners.

Trauma Informed (EMDR Academy trained)

Trauma takes many forms. You may have experienced a break up that was traumatic, loss of a loved one, been in an accident or experienced abuse in childhood. In response, our nervous systems can become hyperalert to danger or shutdown for example: catastrophising, not revisiting the scene of the trauma, or closing yourself off from close relationships.  Trauma can also cause us to develop protective parts which may lead to internal conflict, for example: one part may be trying to protect you from upsetting memories by staying busy while another part would like to rest. I work with you to resolve inner struggles and move to a more peaceful way of being.  I also have specialist EMDR trauma training to alleviate the symptoms of PTSD or distress from frightening or painful memories.

Neurodivergence

I previously worked as a Speech and Language Therapist with people who had autism, ADHD and learning difficulties. My many wonderful years in this field taught me a variety of ways to connect and communicate with another person, outside of words. I have specialist training in the Autism Diagnosis Observation Schedule (ADOS), a diagnostic test for autism spectrum disorder.

Registered / Accredited

Being registered/accredited with a professional body means an individual must have achieved a substantial level of training and experience approved by their member organisation.

BACP
British Association for Counselling & Psychotherapy (BACP)

BACP is one of the UK’s leading professional bodies for counselling and psychotherapy with around 60,000 members. The Association has several different categories of membership, including Student Member, Individual Member, Registered Member MBACP, Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Accred) and Senior Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Snr Acccred).

Registered and accredited members are listed on the BACP Register, which shows that they have demonstrated BACP’s recommended standards for training, proficiency and ethical practice. The BACP Register was the first register of psychological therapists to be accredited by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA).

Accredited and senior accredited membership are voluntary categories for members who choose to undertake a rigorous application and assessment process to demonstrate additional standards around practice, training and supervision.

Individual members will have completed an appropriate counselling or psychotherapy course and started to practise, but they won’t appear on the BACP Register until they've demonstrated that they meet the standards for registration. Student members are still in the process of completing their training.

All members are bound by the BACP Ethical Framework and a Professional Conduct Procedure.
