About me

A very warm welcome, I'm Helen Cunningham, a qualified counsellor and CBT therapist working with adults, children and young people. I provide a counselling service dedicated to personalised support for when life gets tough for you; and I appreciate that life can be very tough.

My counselling service is based in the Lancashire town of Ramsbottom and you will find my individualised approach rooted in both the Person-Centred and Cognitive Behavioural therapeutic approaches. I believe that in my safe and non-judgemental therapeutic environment, you will learn to process emotional pain and any unhelpful thought patterns/behaviours that are keeping you stuck. I will help you grow towards a happier and healthier version of yourself. It is never too early nor too late.

As a graduate member of The British Psychological Society and also a registered member of The British Association for Counsellors and Psychotherapists, I want you to know that my work is also underpinned by professional ethics and standards. Your best interests and safety will always be my priorities.

Member organisations

BACP
British Association for Counselling & Psychotherapy (BACP)

BACP is one of the UK’s leading professional bodies for counselling and psychotherapy with around 60,000 members. The Association has several different categories of membership, including Student Member, Individual Member, Registered Member MBACP, Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Accred) and Senior Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Snr Acccred).

Registered and accredited members are listed on the BACP Register, which shows that they have demonstrated BACP’s recommended standards for training, proficiency and ethical practice. The BACP Register was the first register of psychological therapists to be accredited by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA).

Accredited and senior accredited membership are voluntary categories for members who choose to undertake a rigorous application and assessment process to demonstrate additional standards around practice, training and supervision.

Individual members will have completed an appropriate counselling or psychotherapy course and started to practise, but they won’t appear on the BACP Register until they've demonstrated that they meet the standards for registration. Student members are still in the process of completing their training.

All members are bound by the BACP Ethical Framework and a Professional Conduct Procedure.

Accredited register membership

British Association for Counselling & Psychotherapy
Accredited Register Scheme

The Accredited Register Scheme was set up in 2013 by the Department of Health (DoH) as a way to recognise organisations that hold voluntary registers which meet certain standards. These standards are set by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA).

This therapist has indicated that they belong to an Accredited Register.

Further information

Your Free Consultation Session

Your free telephone consultation will usually be around 20 minutes long, giving you the opportunity to share what has brought you to counselling in the first place and, importantly, for you to begin voicing what you would like to achieve from counselling. Sometimes this can feel difficult, but rest assured, I will gently help you feel comfortable enough to begin your process of change. This consultation session is also an opportunity for you to see how I work and whether that actually feels right for you. Feeling confident with, and equal to me as your counsellor, is essential.

Your Counselling Sessions

My number one priority for all of your counselling sessions is that you continue to feel comfortable and safe enough with me to explore the thoughts, feelings and behaviours that are impacting your life today. However long or short a process that is, I will support you and we will walk your path together.
