About me

Hello, my name is Gemma and I am a fully qualified counsellor registered with the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy (BACP). I am also a qualified Clinical Supervisor providing supervision, training and support to counsellors, students and others in the helping professions.

About Counselling:

Counselling is a talking therapy, where trained practitioners work with people over the long or short term to assist them in bringing about effective change to enhance their wellbeing. Individuals may choose to have counselling because they are experiencing difficulties,  perhaps distress or even dissatisfaction in their life.

Time is set aside for us to explore in a safe space your experiences (past/present), feelings, emotions, relationships, ways of thinking and patterns of behaviour. I aim to help you to identify the best source of action for you to either resolve your difficulties or find healthy ways of coping.

About me and how I work:

I am an experienced counsellor having worked with people of all ages in a number of settings including GP surgeries/medicals centres, schools, alternative education settings and in private practice. I have especially gained a great deal of experience working with young people aged 11-18 over the past ten years.

I will provide, to the best of my ability counselling sessions that endeavour to create a supportive, non-judgmental environment, in which you will be given time and space to understand and gain insight into what is troubling you. This process can foster growth and lead to positive change in your life. I believe working collaboratively to explore your feelings and the experiences that you bring, will aid in finding a clearer perspective, working towards positive change, personal growth and healing.

We will work at a pace to suit your needs and this can be long or short term. I am integratively trained with humanistic values.  My training gives me the flexibility to draw on a number of theories and approach, to best suit individual need. Sometimes I might introduce ways of working that I feel may be helpful.

I do understand how difficult and scary it can be, to feel vulnerable and reach out for support.  We are all human and we will all experience difficult times on our life's journey. I have been through this process myself and this ultimately lead to my own training and longing to become a counsellor.

During the initial assessment I will ask you questions to help my understanding of how I can help you find a way forward with what has brought you to counselling. We will then agree on how we will work together moving forward if you are happy to do so.

I offer face to face, online or telephone sessions.

I am committed to my own continued professional development and regularly in engage in both CPD and supervision.

Member organisations

BACP
British Association for Counselling & Psychotherapy (BACP)

BACP is one of the UK’s leading professional bodies for counselling and psychotherapy with around 60,000 members. The Association has several different categories of membership, including Student Member, Individual Member, Registered Member MBACP, Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Accred) and Senior Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Snr Acccred).

Registered and accredited members are listed on the BACP Register, which shows that they have demonstrated BACP’s recommended standards for training, proficiency and ethical practice. The BACP Register was the first register of psychological therapists to be accredited by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA).

Accredited and senior accredited membership are voluntary categories for members who choose to undertake a rigorous application and assessment process to demonstrate additional standards around practice, training and supervision.

Individual members will have completed an appropriate counselling or psychotherapy course and started to practise, but they won’t appear on the BACP Register until they've demonstrated that they meet the standards for registration. Student members are still in the process of completing their training.

All members are bound by the BACP Ethical Framework and a Professional Conduct Procedure.

The Accredited Register Scheme was set up in 2013 by the Department of Health (DoH) as a way to recognise organisations that hold voluntary registers which meet certain standards. These standards are set by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA).
