About me

Integrative and Humanistic Counselling with Dominique Fester

I offer, warm, empathic, counselling in the heart of Cardiff or online from wherever you are nationally or internationally.

Some individuals may be drawn to counselling as they are struggling in their relationships, others because they can sense discontent or unhappiness within themselves which they wish to explore. More recently, clients may find they need support due to issues which emerged over the pandemic, or as a direct result of it since. Seeking counselling at any time is a courageous step and I welcome clients who are new to counselling and need easing into the process.

I create a comfortable, compassionate environment in which clients can feel shielded to explore their understanding of themselves, and the situations they find themselves in. Together we work towards identifying and addressing the obstacles which stand in the way of the quality of life they would wish for. My background as a creative practitioner and educator has introduced me to people from all walks of life, with many different outlooks. You can rest assured you will be received without judgement.

Training, qualifications & experience

I am a qualified, (BACP) registered, humanistic and integrative counsellor from Bath Centre for Psychotherapy and Counselling (BCPC). I have several years of on-the-ground experience.

I have often worked with clients going through a range of difficulties including anxiety/depression, periods where they are struggling to cope or times where they are going through unexpected/significant life changes. My role is to support clients with any issues which they feel are impacting on their mental wellbeing and ability to find value, and meaning, in their lives. I passionately believe that a healthy level of ordinary happiness is an entitlement that belongs to everyone.

Member organisations

BACP
British Association for Counselling & Psychotherapy (BACP)

BACP is one of the UK’s leading professional bodies for counselling and psychotherapy with around 60,000 members. The Association has several different categories of membership, including Student Member, Individual Member, Registered Member MBACP, Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Accred) and Senior Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Snr Acccred).

Registered and accredited members are listed on the BACP Register, which shows that they have demonstrated BACP’s recommended standards for training, proficiency and ethical practice. The BACP Register was the first register of psychological therapists to be accredited by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA).

Accredited and senior accredited membership are voluntary categories for members who choose to undertake a rigorous application and assessment process to demonstrate additional standards around practice, training and supervision.

Individual members will have completed an appropriate counselling or psychotherapy course and started to practise, but they won’t appear on the BACP Register until they've demonstrated that they meet the standards for registration. Student members are still in the process of completing their training.

All members are bound by the BACP Ethical Framework and a Professional Conduct Procedure.

Accredited register membership

British Association for Counselling & Psychotherapy
Accredited Register Scheme

The Accredited Register Scheme was set up in 2013 by the Department of Health (DoH) as a way to recognise organisations that hold voluntary registers which meet certain standards. These standards are set by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA).

This therapist has indicated that they belong to an Accredited Register.

Further information

The first session will be spent becoming more familiar with each other, discussing what has brought you to therapy, and answering any questions you may have about how I work. We would also discuss what you might expect from counselling and anything specific you may wish to focus on.

As I am a humanistic counsellor, we would focus on your feelings and the best way they can be acted upon going forwards. I also look at attachment issues and how we can separate out what is your responsibility in your relationships, from what is not.

As an integrative counsellor, I also draw upon a range of different therapy schools, according to the unique needs of each client. All my work is underpinned by the Person Centred approach of Carl Rogers. This puts the client’s sense of things at the heart of the counselling, rather than seeing their difficulties as problems to be diagnosed and then solved.

I also offer a range of creative approaches for clients who would find that helpful e.g. using writing, drama, art, tuning into the body or exploring breath work within sessions, to enrich the client’s counselling journey.
