About me
Hello, I qualified as a counsellor in 2005. I work either face to face in my local area of Retford, Nottinghamshire or online, text or email with clients nationwide. I offer daytime and evening appointments.
I began my own personal counselling journey following a family tragedy resulting in anxiety and panic attacks. I was so nervous in the lead up to that first session, I very nearly didn't show up!! I needn't have worried though, I found it so helpful and interesting, learning about myself and why I responded to life events the way I did that I decided to do the training. That one decision has brought me so much awareness and personal freedom which is something I think we all want to experience.
I've always been interested in people, who they are, what shapes them. During my training, I also learned about my 'pet hates' one being not being listened to and definitely not having eye contact when trying to hold a conversation? Why did I feel so sensitive around this? After doing some work I discovered that growing up in quite a large busy household, there just wasn't always the time to be listened to leaving me feeling ignored and unimportant which then lead to feeling that I needed to fight to be heard as a teenager, which of course, now I know I didn't need this at all, so much wasted energy!! What do you consider your pet hates, it might be interesting to explore these?
I have experience of working with relationship problems, not just romantically but with other family members, anxiety and depression, loss and grief, menopause problems and the impact it has on a woman and her family, domestic abuse and violence. Some clients express a feeling of 'feeling lost' especially following certain life changes. I work using an 'Integrative' approach to counselling which means that I work using tools from more than one theory of counselling. I do however try to work using a 'jargon free' approach. I also prefer to work in a 'laid back' way. I offer a FREE 30 minute telephone consultation, so that we can have a chat and see if we might be a good fit and how we might work together. Please get in touch if you'd like to find out more.
Many people are finding finances difficult at the moment, you may want to enter into counselling but are worried about the financial implications. I offer fortnightly sessions which you might find useful.
My aim is to work with you in a way which enables you to feel comfortable enough to share what is troubling you in a private, non judgemental space. Deciding to come for counselling is a fantastic step towards understanding yourself the issues bothering you and where they might originate from, enabling you to make the necessary changes or gain the understanding you need to live a happier, more peaceful and fulfilled life. The one thing I can promise you, is that these issues never go away of there own accord!
"I approached Debbie to help with my 18 year old daughter who was suffering with anxiety and terrible lack of confidence, 18 months on and she is like a changed person, more confident, willing to try and do new things, has passed her driving test and is about to begin uni, just a few things she wouldn't have been able to do previously"
"Debbie is a very approachable lady, easy to talk to with lots of life experience" - Client B
Debbie was able to support me through the changes of the menopause which I was finding extremely difficult, I feel that I have my life back. Client C
Sessions will be for 60 minutes and you will be in complete control, every six or seven weeks, will will take time to 'review' the work that we're doing, look at how it's working for you, see if we need to make a few changes or maybe focus on something particular to you.
Embarking into therapy can feel very daunting, wondering if you will be able to talk to the therapist or if you might even like them, for this reason, I offer a FREE 30 minute initial telephone consultation where we can discuss how we might work together and if we feel that we might be a good 'fit'. Please get in touch if you'd like to book a call.
I look forward to hearing from you.

Member organisations

BACP is one of the UK’s leading professional bodies for counselling and psychotherapy with around 60,000 members. The Association has several different categories of membership, including Student Member, Individual Member, Registered Member MBACP, Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Accred) and Senior Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Snr Acccred). Registered and accredited members are listed on the BACP Register, which shows that they have demonstrated BACP’s recommended standards for training, proficiency and ethical practice. The BACP Register was the first register of psychological therapists to be accredited by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA). Accredited and senior accredited membership are voluntary categories for members who choose to undertake a rigorous application and assessment process to demonstrate additional standards around practice, training and supervision. Individual members will have completed an appropriate counselling or psychotherapy course and started to practise, but they won’t appear on the BACP Register until they've demonstrated that they meet the standards for registration. Student members are still in the process of completing their training. All members are bound by the BACP Ethical Framework and a Professional Conduct Procedure.
