About me

We may have times in our lives when we can struggle to make sense of our present and past experiences and relationships - perhaps leaving us confused, hurt, overwhelmed or even without hope. Our counselling sessions will be a warm, safe and confidential environment in which we can begin to discover what is going on for you. I will work creatively and compassionately with you to build trust and explore meaning, hoping that in time you may find the coherence and acceptance you may need to move on. The work will be directed by you, and my role will be to offer empathic support, without judgement, and focus and challenge where appropriate.

I am a psychodynamic counsellor, also trained and experienced in the person-centred approach (University of Edinburgh), and ethically focused. This means that I will be interested in your attachments, and your social and cultural world, and I see the counselling relationship as a possible vehicle for change and growth in your life.

My counselling practice builds on two decades of experience in helping roles in the Scottish public and voluntary sector, largely in the cultural and education sectors, including work with parents, families and young adults. I am a trauma-informed practitioner and can offer support around family and other relationships, abuse, loss and bereavement, anxiety and depression, work and life changes.

Training, qualifications & experience

  • PG Dip in Counselling and Psychotherapy (University of Edinburgh)
  • MA (Eng Lang and Lit) University of Edinburgh
  • PG Dip Information Studies (University of Strathclyde)

I have experience in a wide range of areas including: relationships, loss and bereavement, pregnancy, parenthood, stress, anxiety, depression, self-harm, chronic illness, ADD and ADHD, work-related issues, trauma and abuse. I have worked with clients both in brief counselling set-ups where the number of sessions is limited and longer-term. I am trained and qualified to work online as well as face to face.

Member organisations

BACP
British Association for Counselling & Psychotherapy (BACP)

BACP is one of the UK’s leading professional bodies for counselling and psychotherapy with around 60,000 members. The Association has several different categories of membership, including Student Member, Individual Member, Registered Member MBACP, Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Accred) and Senior Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Snr Acccred).

Registered and accredited members are listed on the BACP Register, which shows that they have demonstrated BACP’s recommended standards for training, proficiency and ethical practice. The BACP Register was the first register of psychological therapists to be accredited by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA).

Accredited and senior accredited membership are voluntary categories for members who choose to undertake a rigorous application and assessment process to demonstrate additional standards around practice, training and supervision.

Individual members will have completed an appropriate counselling or psychotherapy course and started to practise, but they won’t appear on the BACP Register until they've demonstrated that they meet the standards for registration. Student members are still in the process of completing their training.

All members are bound by the BACP Ethical Framework and a Professional Conduct Procedure.

Accredited register membership

British Association for Counselling & Psychotherapy
Accredited Register Scheme

The Accredited Register Scheme was set up in 2013 by the Department of Health (DoH) as a way to recognise organisations that hold voluntary registers which meet certain standards. These standards are set by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA).

This therapist has indicated that they belong to an Accredited Register.
