About me

I have been counselling for almost 30 years, working with a wide range of people and a wide range of problems, particularly anxiety and depression. I am trained in humanistic, psychodynamic and cognitive behavioural therapies (CBT). I specialise in the person-centred approach, which means we will focus on you and your concerns together at your pace. I will treat you with respect and warmth. I will listen impartially and without judgement to whatever issues are causing you concern. My aim is to help you to find your own solutions to problems, to help you help yourself, which will help you to find lasting peace of mind and identify coping strategies for the future.

Having trained in more than one perspective, it means that I can be flexible and can tailor my approach to suit the individual. This means, for example, we can work with the structured approach of CBT, the holistic approach of person-centred counselling, or use a combination of the two, whichever you prefer.

I can offer counselling on a one to one basis, couples, employee assistance programmes including stress management and getting the best out of your staff. I also have over 10 years experience in working with police officers, both in counselling and management training.

I am experienced in working with anxiety, depression and panic disorders. Having previously counselled for a large organisation for over 10 years, I am also experienced in issues such as work related stress, bullying, long term illness  and medical retirements.

I am a member of the British Association of Counselling and Psychotherapy (MBACP) and adhere to the BACP ethical framework for Good Practice.

I am also a member of the Association for Independent Practitioners.

Member organisations

BACP
British Association for Counselling & Psychotherapy (BACP)

BACP is one of the UK’s leading professional bodies for counselling and psychotherapy with around 60,000 members. The Association has several different categories of membership, including Student Member, Individual Member, Registered Member MBACP, Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Accred) and Senior Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Snr Acccred).

Registered and accredited members are listed on the BACP Register, which shows that they have demonstrated BACP’s recommended standards for training, proficiency and ethical practice. The BACP Register was the first register of psychological therapists to be accredited by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA).

Accredited and senior accredited membership are voluntary categories for members who choose to undertake a rigorous application and assessment process to demonstrate additional standards around practice, training and supervision.

Individual members will have completed an appropriate counselling or psychotherapy course and started to practise, but they won’t appear on the BACP Register until they've demonstrated that they meet the standards for registration. Student members are still in the process of completing their training.

All members are bound by the BACP Ethical Framework and a Professional Conduct Procedure.

British Association for Counselling & Psychotherapy
Accredited Register Scheme

The Accredited Register Scheme was set up in 2013 by the Department of Health (DoH) as a way to recognise organisations that hold voluntary registers which meet certain standards. These standards are set by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA).

This therapist has indicated that they belong to an Accredited Register.

Other areas of counselling I deal with

I have a 16 year old daughter with Downs Syndrome and would be happy to discuss any related topics, including disability, learning difficulty, Downs Syndrome.

I am also experienced in the psychological approach to weight management and currently run  weight loss groups for men and diabetics and also one to one sessions for both men and women.

The above list is not exhaustive. You may wish to discuss one, all or none of the issues listed. For example, your life not being how you would like it to be; or you may not be the one with the problem, but are affected by it and need someone to talk to.

In fact, a problem of any nature, which is having a negative effect on you and your life.

I can also help with relaxation, including breathing exercises and guided imagery. This can certainly help with anxiety, which is often present in addition to other problems.
