About me

I'm Sophie, and I'm a humanistic psychotherapist. This means that my approach to therapy is based on the idea that being true to yourself can help you lead a more fulfilling life. I will endeavour to create a space in which you can express yourself fully and authentically, in which you can be heard and seen; an authentic therapeutic relationship in which any thought or feeling can be expressed.  I am curious to understand your experiences of life and existence, the beliefs you have about the world, and the values you are living by.

It is often the case that our distressing feelings arise from areas in which we have become stuck, or sedimented. We might be stuck in a pattern of behaviour that was once useful but is now causing difficulties, there may have been a troubling or traumatic event or dynamic that has stayed with us, we may be unable to see our way out of present situations that bring pain and suffering. Psychotherapy can help us to unstick ourselves, to sift through the sediment and uncover forgotten or unseen potential and opportunities for satisfaction in life.

Drawing on psychology, neuroscience, philosophy, and literature, we will work together to understand how it is to be you, and how you would like to be in the world. Together we will explore your life, we will examine the ways in which you have come to exist in the world, and we will seek out and address previously unchallenged beliefs about yourself and the world around you. We will consider where these ways-of-being have come from, how they are impacting your life today, and what you can do to create a more harmonious, less distressing existence for yourself.

I am currently working towards a doctorate (DCPsych) in Counselling Psychology and Existential Psychotherapy at the New School of Counselling and Psychotherapy.

Member organisations

BACP
British Association for Counselling & Psychotherapy (BACP)

BACP is one of the UK’s leading professional bodies for counselling and psychotherapy with around 60,000 members. The Association has several different categories of membership, including Student Member, Individual Member, Registered Member MBACP, Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Accred) and Senior Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Snr Acccred).

Registered and accredited members are listed on the BACP Register, which shows that they have demonstrated BACP’s recommended standards for training, proficiency and ethical practice. The BACP Register was the first register of psychological therapists to be accredited by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA).

Accredited and senior accredited membership are voluntary categories for members who choose to undertake a rigorous application and assessment process to demonstrate additional standards around practice, training and supervision.

Individual members will have completed an appropriate counselling or psychotherapy course and started to practise, but they won’t appear on the BACP Register until they've demonstrated that they meet the standards for registration. Student members are still in the process of completing their training.

All members are bound by the BACP Ethical Framework and a Professional Conduct Procedure.
