HOW COUNSELLING CAN HELP

Counselling can help if you find yourself struggling to cope emotionally.  Additionally, the insight and understanding  that counselling provides can assist self-development and personal fulfilment.

When life becomes emotionally difficult, you may be aware of a specific event that has triggered this such as a bereavement, health or work issues, relationships, a change in your family or financial circumstances.  You may be the victim of bullying or have experienced trauma such as being involved in an accident or being the victim of abuse.  Or you may have no idea why you feel the way we do - you just know that you are struggling and want to feel better!

Counselling can provide you with the tools you need to handle your emotions so they do not continue to overwhelm you.  It can help you gain a better understanding of yourself and help you to make sense of how you are feeling, building resilience and self-esteem, and enabling you to make positive change and move forward.

MY EXPERIENCE

I have experience of working with a range of issues, including (but not limited to)  Anxiety, Stress, Low Self-Esteem, Depression, Relationship Issues, Grief/Bereavement, and Baby Loss, and OCD.  I work with clients who have been diagnosed or assessed with EUPD/BPD, ADHD and ASD.  I have additional training and expertise working with Trauma/PTSD, Domestic Abuse, Workplace Bullying and Coercive, Controlling Behaviour.  A focus of my work has been counselling adult survivors of childhood sexual abuse.

MY APPROACH TO COUNSELLING

As well as providing a safe space, as a fully qualified Integrative Counsellor I am able to combine a number of different psychotherapeutic methods and tailor therapy to suit your needs. My approach is open, non-judgmental and encouraging - it is important that you can feel able to explore your emotions freely.  However, therapy might not always be comfortable.  In order for significant change to happen there are times when you may need to move beyond your comfort zone, and therefore, when appropriate, my approach is challenging.  That said, therapy is led by you - you decide what you want to explore and we work together at your pace.

Therapy may be short-term, mainly solution-focused where we look at developing strategies and providing the tools you need to help you handle you emotions effectively.  Or it can be more in-depth, longer-term therapy where we explore your past to identify the root causes of your current emotional issues. This can give you a much greater understanding of yourself and help you to make sense of how you are feeling, enabling you to have more control of your emotions and make the positive changes you need to feel better.

WHAT TO EXPECT

Contacting a Counsellor when you find yourself struggling emotionally is a very positive step - but one that can be quite daunting, especially if you are not really sure what to expect.

During the first session, as well as gaining an understanding of the reasons why you want to engage in therapy and what you would like to achieve, we can also make sure that the therapy I offer is right for you and that you are comfortable working with me.  There is a small amount of paperwork to complete then the remainder of the session and subsequent sessions are for you to talk about the issues that have brought you to counselling and for us to work through them together.

HOW MANY SESSIONS

I offer 50 minute sessions.  The number of sessions required will depend on the nature of the issues you wish to address and the outcome you are looking for.  This can be discussed during the first appointment and reviewed periodically during future sessions.

BACP
British Association for Counselling & Psychotherapy (BACP)

BACP is one of the UK’s leading professional bodies for counselling and psychotherapy with around 60,000 members. The Association has several different categories of membership, including Student Member, Individual Member, Registered Member MBACP, Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Accred) and Senior Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Snr Acccred).

Registered and accredited members are listed on the BACP Register, which shows that they have demonstrated BACP’s recommended standards for training, proficiency and ethical practice. The BACP Register was the first register of psychological therapists to be accredited by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA).

Accredited and senior accredited membership are voluntary categories for members who choose to undertake a rigorous application and assessment process to demonstrate additional standards around practice, training and supervision.

Individual members will have completed an appropriate counselling or psychotherapy course and started to practise, but they won’t appear on the BACP Register until they've demonstrated that they meet the standards for registration. Student members are still in the process of completing their training.

All members are bound by the BACP Ethical Framework and a Professional Conduct Procedure.
