About me

Choosing the right counsellor for YOU is a daunting task. Do you go with the profile picture and the smile, the blurb, the qualifications or the experience? We all look for different things in a person and choosing a stranger that you may want to tell your innermost thoughts and feelings to is HUGE. As part of my counselling training I was in the same position as you, choosing a counsellor who was going to be right for ME. I hope I have been able to incorporate some of what I looked for when I chose my counsellor. I wanted to move away from the sterility of the ‘doctors surgery’ as I feel that the counselling environment should incorporate all of the senses and project calmness, to enable clients to relax into the sessions and breathe.

I have set up an established counselling practice, Breathe Counselling, which is located in a beautiful, peaceful and tranquil summerhouse in Singlewell, Gravesend. This combines the serenity and calmness I wanted to capture. For me, I feel that ‘the shed at the bottom of the garden’ is an ideal location for counselling; to feel comfortable, safe and secure. Where the change can start to happen…if the two right people are in the room. You may have already taken that first step in recognising that you need help on your journey through life. Life experiences shape you into the person you are today; why you do the things you do and say the things you say. With counselling, and exploration, that shape can be less rigid. With knowledge comes the ability to change that shape into a more flexible one, to allow you to see things through fresh eyes enabling you to take those first tentative steps towards creating change in your life.

I offer an empathic, confidential environment so that we can build on our therapeutic relationship, allowing me to walk alongside you on your journey. You can feel listened to, understood, supported and, more importantly, heard and held. Together we can explore your thoughts and feelings at a deeper level which can open up self-reflection and exploration of issues which may be affecting you.

Training, qualifications & experience

I have a Diploma in Therapeutic Counselling and have been trained Integratively. This incorporates different modalities and theories, opening up a vast array of techniques that I am able to use in the counselling room. These methods allow you, as my client, to explore yourself. Underpinning these approaches is my relational, client-centred, compassionate and non-judgmental attitude and approach. I am aware of how our relationship with ourselves, others and society impacts on how we feel in the world. I therefore place great importance on our therapeutic relationship, allowing me to provide a safe and confidential therapeutic space.

I have gained experience in working with a diverse range of clientele. I volunteer in a hospice, where I counsel clients who are either facing bereavement, grieving a death or coming to terms with a terminal illness. I have also worked in a university and I currently work in a college, counselling young people, some of whom are facing tough issues for the first time. I have worked with people who have been victims of abuse, childhood trauma, domestic violence and everything else in-between that life throws at you.

I am a registered member of the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy (BACP) which ensures that we can work together ethically and safely within their framework. Details can be found at - www.bacp.co.uk/ethical_framework

I specialise in Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), using the Rewind Technique where a client can gain closure to traumatic events. PTSD causes involuntary recall which can be in the form of nightmares, hallucinations, flashbacks and ruminations. Triggers can be smell, physical, visual or auditory. Rewind can be completed in 2-3 sessions, where involuntary recall and avoidance behaviour can stop. There is no disclosure in Rewind; there is closure without disclosure.

The Rewind Therapy (RT) has become internationally recognised as an effective way to treat PTSD.  The technique is not intrusive and there is no requirement to disclose details of your trauma, so as to avoid retraumatisation. It is a comfortable and effective treatment that can greatly reduce flashbacks, nughtmares, traumatic or phobic symptoms quickly.. Rewind Technique is a treatment which uses guided imagery and relaxation so as to reduce negative emotional and physiological symptoms in your life.  Rewind offers a way of permanently stopping the involuntary recall of the trauma by filing the traumatic event so it comes under control, while voluntary recall remains.

Together we can look at - • Life transitions, such as separations, deaths, births and illnesses • Trauma or abuse • Anger issues • Gender and sexuality • Relationship difficulties • Depression, anxiety and stress • Eating Disorders • Loneliness and isolation • Loss of meaning and purpose • Difference and Diversity • Generalised anxiety disorder • Panic attacks • Phobias • Family issues

In addition to the therapeutic models from which I work, I also pay close attention to relationship patterns, social groups, religious and cultural backgrounds, gender and gender diversity, sexuality and (dis)ability. The experience of difference and diversity can have a profound impact on how we feel about ourselves and the invisible barriers we sometimes put into place to protect ourselves.

Member organisations

BACP
British Association for Counselling & Psychotherapy (BACP)

BACP is one of the UK’s leading professional bodies for counselling and psychotherapy with around 60,000 members. The Association has several different categories of membership, including Student Member, Individual Member, Registered Member MBACP, Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Accred) and Senior Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Snr Acccred).

Registered and accredited members are listed on the BACP Register, which shows that they have demonstrated BACP’s recommended standards for training, proficiency and ethical practice. The BACP Register was the first register of psychological therapists to be accredited by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA).

Accredited and senior accredited membership are voluntary categories for members who choose to undertake a rigorous application and assessment process to demonstrate additional standards around practice, training and supervision.

Individual members will have completed an appropriate counselling or psychotherapy course and started to practise, but they won’t appear on the BACP Register until they've demonstrated that they meet the standards for registration. Student members are still in the process of completing their training.

All members are bound by the BACP Ethical Framework and a Professional Conduct Procedure.

The Accredited Register Scheme was set up in 2013 by the Department of Health (DoH) as a way to recognise organisations that hold voluntary registers which meet certain standards. These standards are set by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA).
