About me

Whatever brings you to counselling, I listen with an open mind and without judgement.

Perhaps you:

  • wish to work on a specific issue
  • are currently experiencing a life event that you need extra support with
  • have ongoing difficulties that are causing distress or a sense of being 'stuck'
  • have a general unsettled feeling or a desire to understand yourself deeper

My approach is humanistic, heavily influenced by existential therapy which views emotional and psychological issues in a philosophical light, as problems with living as a human being in the world.

As such, the therapy I offer is concerned with understanding your unique experience; we start with where you are now and go from there.

We will work together to create a trusting environment in which you feel able to explore your thoughts and feelings freely and honestly, with me by your side.

Through this relationship I encourage you to be curious about your experience, describing and clarifying it, giving greater understanding, and opening up new possibilities to move forward, reduce distress, and to live a life that is meaningful to you.

My approach is well-suited to working with anxiety, depression and low mood, loss, bereavement and grief, difficult relationships, self-confidence and self-esteem, loneliness, life purpose, meaning and identity, and wanting to live more authentically.

Training, qualifications & experience

  • PGDip Humanistic Psychotherapeutic Counselling (Level 7 BACP accredited course) (University of Brighton)
  • Level 4 Certificate in Counselling Skills (University of Chichester)
  • BSc Psychology (University of Exeter)

I am a registered member of the BACP and adhere to their ethical framework.

Alongside my private practice I currently work with Aquilis Counselling Service, based at QA Hospital, providing counselling for hospital staff.

I have worked as a counsellor at a low-cost counselling service supporting adults who present with a range of difficulties. I have also worked as a counsellor at a local charity supporting young adults, where I am now a trustee. Prior to this I have volunteered as an emotional support worker in person and over the telephone.

Member organisations

BACP
British Association for Counselling & Psychotherapy (BACP)

BACP is one of the UK’s leading professional bodies for counselling and psychotherapy with around 60,000 members. The Association has several different categories of membership, including Student Member, Individual Member, Registered Member MBACP, Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Accred) and Senior Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Snr Acccred).

Registered and accredited members are listed on the BACP Register, which shows that they have demonstrated BACP’s recommended standards for training, proficiency and ethical practice. The BACP Register was the first register of psychological therapists to be accredited by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA).

Accredited and senior accredited membership are voluntary categories for members who choose to undertake a rigorous application and assessment process to demonstrate additional standards around practice, training and supervision.

Individual members will have completed an appropriate counselling or psychotherapy course and started to practise, but they won’t appear on the BACP Register until they've demonstrated that they meet the standards for registration. Student members are still in the process of completing their training.

All members are bound by the BACP Ethical Framework and a Professional Conduct Procedure.

Accredited register membership

British Association for Counselling & Psychotherapy
Accredited Register Scheme

The Accredited Register Scheme was set up in 2013 by the Department of Health (DoH) as a way to recognise organisations that hold voluntary registers which meet certain standards. These standards are set by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA).

This therapist has indicated that they belong to an Accredited Register.

Additional information

I offer a free initial discussion online (via Zoom).  Choosing the right therapist for you is important and this first chat will give us an opportunity to get to know each other. You can ask me any questions you may have.

I will invite you to say something briefly about what has brought you to counselling and what you hope to get out of it, understanding that it might not be easy to talk about the things that really matter straight away.

Together we can decide if what I offer might be suitable for you.  There is no obligation to continue if things don't feel right, but if we do, we can look to arrange a first session soon.
