About me

My counselling practice is based at 52A Poole Road, Westbourne, Bournemouth BH4 9DZ.

I work with clients to resolve problematic behaviours, beliefs, feelings and relationship issues. Deciding to have therapy is a big step for any client and I hope to work with individuals to become the healthiest version of themselves and to live the best life possible; no matter what challenges are faced. Therapy can help a client change some patterns of relating, habits or resolving painful feelings and more. The therapeutic relationship is unique and allows the client to work with a professional in a non-judgemental, respectful and safe environment.

I have substantial training and experience in working with clients who have experienced trauma including;  childhood sexual abuse, sexual violence, domestic abuse and coercive control.

I believe that therapy can be a wonderful tool to help people live happier more fulfilling lives. It can address a wide range of mental health issues such as depression, anxiety and grief. Therapy can also be used for purposes other than immediate mental health concerns. For example, if struggling with the stress of a new career, support at times of crisis and assistance with personal problems.

The counselling I offer a puts client autonomy at the heart of the therapeutic work. All information shared will be treated confidentiality and respectively within certain limitations which includes; harm to self, others or a child at risk.

Following a client enquiry, I will agree with the prospective client a time for a free introductory telephone consultation, where we can mutually agree if my service is right for them.

This will then follow with 50-minute counselling sessions, usually weekly, which are 1:1 and face-to-face. The sessions will take place in a professional, welcoming and private environment. The agreement will be regularly reviewed to ensure the sessions continue to meet client needs. The work maybe long-term, short-time or time-limited depending on the needs of the client.

Supervision

Supervision is a requirement for counselling practice both from an ethical perspective and as part of a practitioner's professional membership.  I provide an integrative approach to build a safe and effective supervisory relationship which allows practitioners to explore and reflect on their therapeutic work whilst paying attention to both ethical practice and wellbeing.

I am a qualified supervisor and can provide clinical supervision to counsellors/psychotherapists either face to face or online, either one to one or in groups.  Supervision will typically take place twice a month (once every two weeks) whilst training, but when qualified practitioners may be prefer a longer session once a month.  This depends on course and/or professional membership requirements.

Training, qualifications & experience

I qualified locally as a Counsellor in Bournemouth and have a Level 4 Diploma in Therapeutic Counselling. I am also a qualified Clinical Supervisor with a Level 6 qualification in Supervision.  I am a member of the BACP (British Association of Counsellors and Psychotherapists) and work in accordance with their Ethical Framework. I am also a member of the HACP (Hampshire Association of Counsellors and Psychotherapists) and have an enhanced DBS check. I am fully insured for public liability and professional indemnity. I receives regular supervision to support my work.

I have been working with clients for the last six years and supporting them with a wide range of issues including; stress, anxiety, depression, parenting concerns, relationships, eating disorders, sexual identity, loss, self-esteem, bereavement, trauma, sexual violence, domestic abuse, child abuse, anger management, PTSD, redundancy and work-related issues.

I am a Humanistic Integrative Counsellor which means I can call on a range of theoretical approaches to support my client work. These include: Person-Centred, Gestalt and Transactional Analysis. I have had additional training in Compassion-Focused Therapy which is particularly beneficial when working with clients who have experienced any type of trauma. I undertake regular CPD in order to keep up my professional membership of the BACP.

I am a Senior Clinical Supervisor/Counsellor with STARs, Dorset (Sexual Trauma and Recovery Service) providing one-to-one therapeutic support for clients who have experienced sexual violence, domestic abuse and childhood abuse. I feel privileged when clients feel safe enough to share their thoughts, feelings and emotions and we can start to explore their journey to recovery. I also provide both one to one and group supervision to counsellors and non-clinical staff.

Member organisations

BACP
British Association for Counselling & Psychotherapy (BACP)

BACP is one of the UK’s leading professional bodies for counselling and psychotherapy with around 60,000 members. The Association has several different categories of membership, including Student Member, Individual Member, Registered Member MBACP, Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Accred) and Senior Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Snr Acccred).

Registered and accredited members are listed on the BACP Register, which shows that they have demonstrated BACP’s recommended standards for training, proficiency and ethical practice. The BACP Register was the first register of psychological therapists to be accredited by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA).

Accredited and senior accredited membership are voluntary categories for members who choose to undertake a rigorous application and assessment process to demonstrate additional standards around practice, training and supervision.

Individual members will have completed an appropriate counselling or psychotherapy course and started to practise, but they won’t appear on the BACP Register until they've demonstrated that they meet the standards for registration. Student members are still in the process of completing their training.

All members are bound by the BACP Ethical Framework and a Professional Conduct Procedure.

The Accredited Register Scheme was set up in 2013 by the Department of Health (DoH) as a way to recognise organisations that hold voluntary registers which meet certain standards. These standards are set by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA).

Client Testimonials

'Lori was respectful, understanding and very easy to talk to from the outset.  She managed to find me a session time that would fit in with my work commitments. The communication between myself and Lori made it easier to address my goals, whilst identifying some underlying issues and concerns. The best thing about the counselling was feeling able to discuss things at ease and being comfortable enough to open up so quickly and discuss things that had previously been hidden away.   I was very satisfied with the support I received' (Male client, 'M', 40-50 age range).

'Lori managed to find me a suitable time and date to meet within one day of contacting her.  The location was suitable for me and I felt treated with respect.  She provided me with information about her counselling practice prior to meeting with her face to face.  I had never received counselling before so I did not know what to expect, but I came to look forward to our sessions.  Lori's counselling sessions helped me achieve my goal when I was going through a very difficult time.  Overall, I was very satisfied with the support I received' (Male client, 'C', 60-70 age range).
