About me

Hello, my name is Katherine, and I am an Art Psychotherapist. I provide therapeutic support to children, adolescents, adults and teachers within the education sector and in my private practice. Throughout life, we all experience challenges and difficulties that can sometimes feel too much to deal with on our own. It can be difficult to reach out and ask for help, and I understand that finding the right person to work alongside you is an incredibly important part of the therapeutic process. I facilitate a safe and contained therapeutic space with a range of art materials, if you wish to use them, to allow a creative way to process difficult experiences and feelings.

I offer a psychodynamic way in which to think about and work with difficult and distressing feelings which can often relate to previous experiences and events in your life. I understand that everyone is an individual, and so I draw upon a range of theoretical approaches to support children, adolescents, and adults in order to meet each person’s specific needs. I am flexible in my approach and aim to respect everybody’s individuality.

Art Psychotherapy is often a more accessible form of therapy for those who struggle to verbalise and make sense of their emotions, and it can facilitate change in the long term, enabling you to find a different way of relating to the world.

I specialise in working with young people and children who have autism and ADHD, and work closely with the parents/carers of the young people I see as well as offering support to the wider network around them such as their educational settings. We will review the therapeutic progress together regularly.

I am a fully state registered therapist with my practice governed by the Health Professional Council. I regularly engage with my own professional development and art making to ensure I am equipped with current research and practice. I adhere to the Code of Ethics; maintaining confidentiality and following relevant safeguarding procedures where necessary. I reflect regularly with a senior clinical supervisor. I hold full professional liability insurance and an up to date DBS certificate.

What to expect:

All of my work begins with a free 15 minute initial phone call to ensure I can provide what you are looking for. This is followed by an initial consultation and assessment where there is opportunity for you and/or your child to talk about your reasons for seeking support as well as asking any questions that you may have. From here, we can decide whether to go forward and arrange further appointments.

We may agree on short term (6-12 sessions) or more long term work (6 months +) and the therapy can be open ended, with us reviewing every 6-10 sessions on the next steps. The amount of sessions will depend on you or your child’s specific needs. Sessions are held 1:1 for 50 minutes each week at the same day and time, which is agreed upon at the beginning of our therapeutic journey together. I can also offer parent and child joint therapy (where necessary) to help strengthen the relationship. I can also provide support for parents, particularly those who have neurodiverse children.

Training, qualifications & experience

I have over 8 years extensive experience working with young people and adults in various educational and care settings. I also have extensive experience in working with people of various ages with emotional, social and behavioural difficulties including: ASC, ADHD, Attachment disorders and mental health difficulties (anxiety, depression, disordered eating) as well as long term experience in working with those who have spent large portions of their life in hospital and care settings. I have worked with people who have experienced trauma, sexual, physical and psychological abuse and those dealing with suicidal thoughts and self-harm.

  • Currently I facilitate therapy with young people and adults at The Butterfly Room, Stevenage as well as in my Private Practice in Brampton, Cambridgeshire.
  • I complete ADOS assessments at The Butterfly Room as well as consulting parents and young people who are considering a formal diagnostic assessment for ASC. Here, I explore their concerns with them as well as looking at the behaviours of the young person to see whether a formal assessment for ASC may be the right step for them.
  • I further provide workshops within schools for the staff and parents of young people struggling with emotional regulation. My latest workshop explores hyper and hypo arousal and the fight/flight/freeze response in young people and how this may manifest at home and within the school environment.
