About me

I am a widely experienced Counsellor for adults, children and Young people. With 30 years in education and mental health settings, I draw on various psychotherapeutic approaches to suit your specific needs.

You may be coming about a specific issue, such as depression, anxiety or an ADHD diagnosis. There may be some trauma or abuse in your background that is affecting your well-being. Your need for counselling could be the result of bereavement or simply that you are feeling sad.

Some people have an urgent need for counselling. Maybe you are suffering panic attacks or struggling with intrusive or suicidal thoughts. I integrate suitable techniques to help in the short term. From there, we can dig deeper to create long-term changes.

I work with clients from The LGBTQ+ community and anyone identifying as Neurodiverse.  I work online internationally and have developed a sensitivity to ethnic and cultural differences, particularly in relationships. I actively campaign against conversion therapy.

Whatever your concern, I will be warm and genuine with you. I share my struggles as a writer on my website. Please read those and ask me anything about my life you feel may help you in yours.

I intend to collaborate with you in sorting through things that you find difficult or distressing and the things that give you joy.

We may look for patterns, explore traumas or celebrate successes. We may focus on your present circumstances or explore all aspects of your past that may affect your future. You take the lead. You are the expert in your life. I can help you untangle knots and tease out threads.

Email or text me or access my calendar on my website https://johnwaltercounsellor.com/  if you would like to arrange a free 30-minute set-up call. From there, we could book the first session to see if we are happy to work together. You can then book further sessions weekly or fortnightly through my website.

Training, qualifications & experience

I first worked in a mental health setting with children and young people in 1986. As a teacher, I continued working with those who had difficulty accessing formal education. I have been a foster parent and run my own business using music to create community and connection.

After suffering from personal trauma, I began getting a formal therapeutic qualification in 2018. My counselling experience over the last four years has been working with various long-term issues related to bereavement, relationship breakdown and well-being issues. Many of my online clients are in their twenties and thirties and wish to explore family-related issues which seem to be inhibiting them from creating the life they want for themselves.

Member organisations

BACP
British Association for Counselling & Psychotherapy (BACP)

BACP is one of the UK’s leading professional bodies for counselling and psychotherapy with around 60,000 members. The Association has several different categories of membership, including Student Member, Individual Member, Registered Member MBACP, Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Accred) and Senior Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Snr Acccred).

Registered and accredited members are listed on the BACP Register, which shows that they have demonstrated BACP’s recommended standards for training, proficiency and ethical practice. The BACP Register was the first register of psychological therapists to be accredited by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA).

Accredited and senior accredited membership are voluntary categories for members who choose to undertake a rigorous application and assessment process to demonstrate additional standards around practice, training and supervision.

Individual members will have completed an appropriate counselling or psychotherapy course and started to practise, but they won’t appear on the BACP Register until they've demonstrated that they meet the standards for registration. Student members are still in the process of completing their training.

All members are bound by the BACP Ethical Framework and a Professional Conduct Procedure.

Accredited register membership

British Association for Counselling & Psychotherapy
Accredited Register Scheme

The Accredited Register Scheme was set up in 2013 by the Department of Health (DoH) as a way to recognise organisations that hold voluntary registers which meet certain standards. These standards are set by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA).

This therapist has indicated that they belong to an Accredited Register.
