About me

About me and what I can offer you

Hello, my name is Helen Brightwell, seeking help may not be easy but I hope it will be worth it, finding the right counsellor for you may be a challenge too but I am easy to talk to and a natural people person.  Therefore, when you contact me I hope to alleviate some of the apprehension that you may be experiencing around taking those first steps.  My aim is to provide the conditions needed for you to feel confident enough to allow me to journey with you to move forward in your life positively.

I work with a range of people seeking help with their difficulties, I work within an integrative approach which means I have the skills, experience and knowledge to be able to support you without expecting you to fit into a specific theoretical model.  I work according to your personality, wants/like/dislikes so that you receive the help that you need and that works for you.

The beauty of human beings is that we are all so very different and I would really like to be the counsellor that you choose to work with, however there is no obligation after having a chat on the phone or after an initial session for you to continue with me.  Ultimately, I want you to work with someone who is just right for you so that you can receive the help that you are looking for.

Member organisations

BACP
British Association for Counselling & Psychotherapy (BACP)

BACP is one of the UK’s leading professional bodies for counselling and psychotherapy with around 60,000 members. The Association has several different categories of membership, including Student Member, Individual Member, Registered Member MBACP, Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Accred) and Senior Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Snr Acccred).

Registered and accredited members are listed on the BACP Register, which shows that they have demonstrated BACP’s recommended standards for training, proficiency and ethical practice. The BACP Register was the first register of psychological therapists to be accredited by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA).

Accredited and senior accredited membership are voluntary categories for members who choose to undertake a rigorous application and assessment process to demonstrate additional standards around practice, training and supervision.

Individual members will have completed an appropriate counselling or psychotherapy course and started to practise, but they won’t appear on the BACP Register until they've demonstrated that they meet the standards for registration. Student members are still in the process of completing their training.

All members are bound by the BACP Ethical Framework and a Professional Conduct Procedure.

Accredited register membership

British Association for Counselling & Psychotherapy
Accredited Register Scheme

The Accredited Register Scheme was set up in 2013 by the Department of Health (DoH) as a way to recognise organisations that hold voluntary registers which meet certain standards. These standards are set by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA).

This therapist has indicated that they belong to an Accredited Register.

Questions you are asking yourself or issues which you may be experiencing

Do you find yourself repeating unhelpful old patterns of behaviour?

Do you repeatedly attract the same types of unhealthy relationships?

Do you feel stuck, low, anxious, afraid, alone, confused or stressed as a result of depression, relationships, abuse, self-harm, childhood trauma, loss or work?

Are these feelings impacting your social, emotional and psychological well-being and hindering you from living a fulfilling life?

Have traumatic experiences overwhelmingly impacted your life or conversely left you feeling numb?

Do you struggle to regulate, manage or locate your emotions?

Have your own or someone else’s gambling difficulties negatively affected your life?

Have you lost your sense of self or never really known who you are other than to be how others want you to be?

If you answered ‘yes’ to any of the above then I could work with you by providing a comfortable and confidential space for you to talk openly, free from judgment. I aim to view and understand your world through your eyes in order to really know you and through our relationship enable you to feel confident and safe enough to share (in your own time) your whole self. This could include giving a voice to parts of you that perhaps feel vulnerable, ashamed, ignored or angry.

If you would like to arrange an informal chat on the phone please drop me an email and I will get back to you within a few hours. I do not reply to missed calls or voicemails so as to maintain confidentiality but once we connect via email we can arrange a mutually convenient time to chat via telephone.

I look forward to hearing from you
