About me

Hello, and thanks for stopping by. My name is Emma and I am queer and trans affirmative therapeutic counsellor. I offer both short and long-term counselling and therapy for adults in Aigburth (Liverpool) and surrounding areas, as well as online. I am passionate about people and their capacity for self-reflection and change. Therapy is for everyone, and its impact can be life-changing.

Prior to working as a therapist, I worked as an oral historian and lecturer. It was that work that led me to recognise both the value of therapy and the absence of adequate mental health resources for students and staff working in higher education.

My main way of working is Transactional Analysis (TA). Eric Berne developed TA in the late 1950s. Berne believed that we all possess three ego-states: parent, adult and child. Practitioners of TA use the theory of ego states and other concepts and models (such as scripts and drivers for example) to analyse how individuals communicate with others.

I am committed to exploring the ways that people have adapted to keep themselves safe and the messages that appear during our most challenging moments. Together, we will work to understand your history and question the unhelpful messages that might be holding you back. I am solution focused and deeply interested in the power of single session therapy, an approach developed and championed by Windy Dryden.

People often come to therapy because their coping mechanisms have been depleted and life feels like it is happening to them. Therapy will help you to rediscover your agency and equip you with the tools that you need to move forward with hope and resilience.

I have worked extensively with the LGBTQIA+ community and with a wide range of clients seeking to understand themselves and their behaviour more fully.

Member organisations

BACP
British Association for Counselling & Psychotherapy (BACP)

BACP is one of the UK’s leading professional bodies for counselling and psychotherapy with around 60,000 members. The Association has several different categories of membership, including Student Member, Individual Member, Registered Member MBACP, Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Accred) and Senior Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Snr Acccred).

Registered and accredited members are listed on the BACP Register, which shows that they have demonstrated BACP’s recommended standards for training, proficiency and ethical practice. The BACP Register was the first register of psychological therapists to be accredited by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA).

Accredited and senior accredited membership are voluntary categories for members who choose to undertake a rigorous application and assessment process to demonstrate additional standards around practice, training and supervision.

Individual members will have completed an appropriate counselling or psychotherapy course and started to practise, but they won’t appear on the BACP Register until they've demonstrated that they meet the standards for registration. Student members are still in the process of completing their training.

All members are bound by the BACP Ethical Framework and a Professional Conduct Procedure.

Accredited Register Scheme

The Accredited Register Scheme was set up in 2013 by the Department of Health (DoH) as a way to recognise organisations that hold voluntary registers which meet certain standards. These standards are set by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA).
