About me

I am an Art Psychotherapist and have been practicing since 2005.  I have worked in Edinburgh and the Lothians with individuals and groups in both short and long-term therapy.  Art psychotherapy is a regulated, psychological therapy which uses art materials to help express thoughts and feelings.  Art materials can offer a way into the therapy work, they can bring shape to thoughts and feelings when words can’t be found.  I provide a supportive, confidential and accepting space for you to explore safely and talk about whatever is concerning you.  Art psychotherapy can be a vehicle for you to have a better understanding of why you do the things you do, and help you make the changes in your thinking, feelings and behaviour that you are seeking.  My aim is to help you move towards a more meaningful life and a sense of wholeness and wellbeing.

Training, qualifications & experience

I graduated in 2003 with distinction and since then I have worked in community mental health with adults as an Art Psychotherapist and held the post of Senior Art Psychotherapist within Health-in-Mind from 2009 to December 2021. During this time I facilitated groups, held a caseload of individual clients, supervised art therapy trainees and promoted and managed an Art Psychotherapy Service.

I have experience of working with many mental health issues including depression, anxiety and panic attacks, personality disorders and dissociation. I also have extensive experience working with people who have experienced early trauma.

In 2018, I co-facilitated an Interpersonal Learning group for the Art Therapy MSc at Queen Margaret University. More recently, since 2019, I have been working in Edinburgh University’s Student Counselling Service.  I also now have my own private practice in Edinburgh.

Before training in Art Psychotherapy, I worked as a Community Artist with children and in community education, with adults and adolescents with learning disabilities.

Groups

Since 2005 I have worked with art psychotherapy groups in community mental health.

Groups can offer the potential to look at yourself in relationship with others in an immediate way. In therapy groups, people often begin to connect more deeply and meaningfully with themselves and each other. Some initial, gentle guidance will be offered to help the group bond and feel safe.  My approach is non-directive, however individuals may wish to work with personal themes.  These can become more focused and they often evolve and suggest other directions to go in.

Please call to express an interest in joining a group.
