About me

Tim O’Neill MBACP (Senior Accredited)  Adult & Young Person Counsellor/Psychotherapist/Supervisor  Diploma in Supervision

My experience as a therapist

I can offer you 27 years experience as a BACP Senior Accredited Counsellor and Psychotherapist. I work with adults of all ages and specialise in counselling young people 12-19 years old and students at universities throughout the UK. I am a BUPA recognised therapist in addition to other major medical insurers and qualified as a counselling/psychotherapy Supervisor since 2009. I have lectured in counselling for 20 years. I also offer you the option of Walk and Talk Therapy (please see below).

The different therapy options and availability I can offer you.

I work face to face with clients in a large well ventilated therapy room at a purpose built counselling service attached to a medical practice in Godalming. I also work remotely with clients all over the UK in addition to offering phone sessions . I can offer you the flexibility of sessions early in the morning, during the evening and at weekends, in addition to normal weekday session times.

Walk and Talk Therapy

I can also offer you Walk and Talk Therapy.  This form of therapy is very popular with clients of all ages. Walks take place by the River Wey in Godalming and occasionally Guildford, away from crowded areas against a scenic backdrop.  See separate Walk and Talk section at the bottom of this page for more details.

I am able to offer you a free 20 minute introductory phone call to discuss working together and answer any questions you wish to ask in relation to how i work or counselling in general.

Personal Specialisms

My experience in counselling young people 12-19 years old and university students is informed by many years therapeutic practice in colleges and universities. I have attended many training events specific to young people. Flexible sessions offered to fit academic commitments.

Whether you are an adult, or a young person, I offer further specialisms in Generalised Anxiety disorder, Panic disorder, Social anxiety Phobias, Stress, Depression/low mood, Bereavement and relationships/family. If you are a trainee counsellor studying on Diploma, Degree, Masters or PhD level courses I can offer you term time contracts in line with your academic needs.

Other Issues I can help you with include: exam stress, low self esteem, self-harm, separation/divorce, postnatal depression and suicidal ideation. See below for a definitive list.

I understand the reason you are seeking counselling may not be related to any specific issue. For example you may want a safe and confidential space to explore your feelings or seek to grow as a person. It is my wish that our sessions together can help you to understand yourself better and provide greater insight and awareness of your presenting issues or life experience.

My Person Centred/Cognitive Integrative approach to counselling

As a Person Centred practitioner It is important to me that you have the autonomy to choose the issues and concerns you wish to focus upon and the pace you wish to work at. I aim to be open and honest in relation to all aspects of our work together.

I work alongside you in a relationship built around equality and trust. I offer a safe, confidential environment, free from judgement where I seek to empathically communicate my understanding of your concerns. The quality of the counselling relationship is often the most significant factor for clients reflecting on why counselling helped them.

I also Integrate aspects of Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) to enhance our work together.  I introduce (where appropriate) some basic neuroscience and psycho-education to help clients understand more fully what contributes to such issues as Stress, Anxiety and Depression. Once again (if appropriate) I will introduce clients to certain self help models to aid the development of coping strategies and resilience

Exam Stress

I have extensive experience of working effectively with young people coping with exam stress and anxiety. I integrate an established CBT model to improve a young person’s ability to successfully prepare for and sit their exams. Most commonly this has been with A level and GCSE  and university students.

Walk and Talk Therapy

Is a form of counselling/psychotherapy where confidential sessions take place outside with you the client and myself walking side by side. It is also referred to as Eco-therapy, or Outdoor Therapy. The pace is always set by you and I match your pace. If you wish to pause or sit you are free to do so.

The objective of Walk and Talk is for us to have a counselling session. However walking in a natural environment provides an additional therapeutic context. I adhere to the BACP Ethical Framework and same rules of confidentiality as in face to face counselling sessions.

Walk & Talk offers you the benefits of walking outside with the psychological benefits of talking to a counsellor. Studies show it reduces levels of anxiety, panic, stress, depression and enhances a sense of well being. Sessions take place in Godalming (as pictured) which is surrounded by beautiful countryside. I can also offer you Walk and Talk sessions in Guildford.

Please contact me for further details and an information sheet if you are interested in Walk and Talk sessions.

BACP
British Association for Counselling & Psychotherapy (BACP)

BACP is one of the UK’s leading professional bodies for counselling and psychotherapy with around 60,000 members. The Association has several different categories of membership, including Student Member, Individual Member, Registered Member MBACP, Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Accred) and Senior Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Snr Acccred).

Registered and accredited members are listed on the BACP Register, which shows that they have demonstrated BACP’s recommended standards for training, proficiency and ethical practice. The BACP Register was the first register of psychological therapists to be accredited by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA).

Accredited and senior accredited membership are voluntary categories for members who choose to undertake a rigorous application and assessment process to demonstrate additional standards around practice, training and supervision.

Individual members will have completed an appropriate counselling or psychotherapy course and started to practise, but they won’t appear on the BACP Register until they've demonstrated that they meet the standards for registration. Student members are still in the process of completing their training.

All members are bound by the BACP Ethical Framework and a Professional Conduct Procedure.
