About me

About me and my therapy practice

Whatever your reasons for seeking counselling, I will provide an environment where you can explore anything you want to in the knowledge that you can feel totally safe, regardless of what you may wish to discuss.

It should be an empowering process for you, where you learn more about yourself, about how you relate to others and about the person you would like to become.

My Approach to Counselling

I believe we all have the innate resources to fulfil our potential and live satisfying lives. Yet, there are times when we may be unable to see ways through our difficulties.

You can expect me to listen, put you first, to be understanding, respectful and non-judgemental as we talk about the challenges you may be facing. Together we can learn new perspectives and strategies enabling you to cope, or to make changes in your life, if that is what you want to do.

Although mainly person centred, I consider and integrate other theories to compliment my practice such as Emotion Focused Therapy, Transactional Analysis and Cognitive Behavioural Therapy.

I am able to offer short-term, time limited or open-ended therapy, depending upon your needs.

Training, qualifications & experience

Training and Experience

Over several years, I have worked with many people who have experienced a broad range of complex issues, which they often perceived as insurmountable. However, working with them in a collaborative and supportive way has enabled them to adapt, make their own way, cope and thrive.

I have for many years worked in public sector support services on the front line and at management levels. I have previously worked for a national mental health charity for several years and also a national bereavement service where I still fulfil a training role.

I work within the British Association of Counselling and Psychotherapy (BACP) Ethical Framework for good practice. I maintain my professional competence through continuous personal development; always work ethically within my practice and always with your best interests in mind.

Registered / Accredited

Registered / Accredited

Being registered/accredited with a professional body means an individual must have achieved a substantial level of training and experience approved by their member organisation.

BACP
British Association for Counselling & Psychotherapy (BACP)

BACP is one of the UK’s leading professional bodies for counselling and psychotherapy with around 60,000 members. The Association has several different categories of membership, including Student Member, Individual Member, Registered Member MBACP, Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Accred) and Senior Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Snr Acccred).

Registered and accredited members are listed on the BACP Register, which shows that they have demonstrated BACP’s recommended standards for training, proficiency and ethical practice. The BACP Register was the first register of psychological therapists to be accredited by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA).

Accredited and senior accredited membership are voluntary categories for members who choose to undertake a rigorous application and assessment process to demonstrate additional standards around practice, training and supervision.

Individual members will have completed an appropriate counselling or psychotherapy course and started to practise, but they won’t appear on the BACP Register until they've demonstrated that they meet the standards for registration. Student members are still in the process of completing their training.

All members are bound by the BACP Ethical Framework and a Professional Conduct Procedure.

The Accredited Register Scheme was set up in 2013 by the Department of Health (DoH) as a way to recognise organisations that hold voluntary registers which meet certain standards. These standards are set by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA).

Further information

Is this for me?

Because finding the right counsellor is important, I offer an optional short initial telephone consultation free of charge, prior to commencement, to discuss whether counselling with me will meet your needs.

It will give us the chance to get to know each other a little and discuss what it is that is bringing you to counselling. Afterwards you are under no obligation to continue with me, as it is just to see if we feel we can work together. How long we might work together will depend on your needs, wishes and the issues you bring. I will always try to work in ways and at your pace so that it is right for you.
