About me

Welcome! My name is Jay Keep. I am a fully qualified, experienced and Accredited Counsellor & Psychotherapist. I am also a Wellbeing Coach, specialising  in recovery from Chronic Fatigue/Fibromyalgia.  alongside this I am also studying for a diploma in supervision and am offering a reduction in fees for level 4 counselling (or above) coaching students  for the duration of my training.

I can offer you confidential, professional counselling/coaching/supervision  from my purpose built relaxed, peaceful studio, based in Mansfield Woodhouse

It is conveniently placed for Ollerton , Newark, Worksop, Mansfield, Sutton in Ashfield, Worksop Southwell and surrounding areas by car or bus.

                                                  HOW I CAN HELP?

Sometimes we can find ourselves living a life that does not bring joy or fulfilment, but we continue to put one foot in front of the other in the hope that something might eventually change, this where therapy can help.

I offer a calm, confidential, non-judgemental space in which, together, we can explore and share whatever is troubling you, whether it is counselling a short term, specific issue or psychotherapy for deeper rooted problems.

Some of the personal feedback I have had from clients, peers and employers is that I am friendly, warm and approachable.

                                                          FEELINGS

Life can often feel too much and we can experience feelings of; fear, sadness, loneliness/isolation, overwhelm, stress, anxiety, depression and anger. But it could also feel like you do not identify with any of those feelings at all because you have shut down and simply feel numb.

Sadly, our society does not encourage us to express those feelings, we are encouraged to maintain a 'stiff upper lip' and keep them hidden and carry on, but where do those feelings go?

Our feelings are important, they are messages, they tell us when all is not well, they need to be felt expressed and processed safely, this is why therapy is so helpful, you are free to say what it is you are feeling and know you are truly being heard without judgement

                                                        RELATIONSHIPS

It is universally agreed that human beings need relationships, they are important to our mental, physical and emotional wellbeing. It maybe that you are experiencing difficulties with relationships - for example, you are being bullied or are in a relationship that feels unhealthy. It could be that the relationship you have with yourself is not what you would like it to be, and are suffering with lack of confidence or have low self-esteem.

                                                        GRIEF AND LOSS

It could be that you are struggling to cope with your feelings of loss following a death. Grief is not confined to death of a person alone, it can occur when we experience a loss of any kind, it could be a relationship, a job, a much loved pet. Whatever the loss the process of grief is profoundly felt, it helps to share those feelings in therapy.

                                                            ANXIETY

Often we become anxious and fearful about something specific or just have a generalised feeling of anxiety that we do not really understand. For some there may be a clearly defined cause, for others it might be a complete mystery.

Therapy can help with anxiety, understanding why you feel the way you feel, what is happening physically in the body this understanding can go a long way towards reducing the symptoms of anxiety.

You are then able to learn strategies that help you to manage the distressing symptoms of anxiety. (See below a testimonial by a client I recently worked with)

                                                    CREATIVE STRATEGIES

I place enormous faith in the resilience and resourcefulness of people. It may be that, in order to soothe yourself and manage your life and distress, you have developed strategies or behaviours e.g. drinking excessively, self-harming, smoking, over-eating, that once helped you to cope but now have become a problem and has added to your difficulties.

Talking about and learning why we do something, often normalises our feelings and helps us to feel more compassionate towards ourselves and in doing so creates the right conditions to move forward.

                                                          BENEFITS

Some of the benefits of therapy that people have reported include enhanced;

Increased self-esteem
Sense of peace
Ability to recognise and understand unwanted thoughts and/or behavioural patterns
Self-awareness
Self-acceptance
Ability to relate to self and others
Ability to manage stress and anxiety
Ability to manage emotions
Self-fulfilment
Enlightenment
Social skills
Assertiveness
Autonomy
Clarity

                                                          ASSESSMENT

WHAT CAN YOU EXPECT?

Initially you would come for a free 30 minute (no obligation) chat to give me a brief overview of your needs. From there we can assess whether you feel that I am the right person to help and for me to decide whether or not I am qualified to provide the type of therapy that you need.

If we mutually agree that we can work together I will take down your contact details and do an assessment of your past medical, and social history and set up a regular session time and date.

Your wellbeing will always be central to the work, which is why I offer regular reviews throughout our time together where progress can be monitored and any issues arising can be mutually acknowledged and discussed. This ensures that your needs are being met.

*If you are interested in Wellbeing Coaching for Chronic Fatigue/Fibromyalgia then the health assessment will be more detailed.

                                                            HOW I WORK

The type of therapy I offer is known as Humanistic and Integrative this means that I hold certain fundamental of positive beliefs about Humans Beings and use a wide range of theories and tools to increase understanding and awareness.

HUMANISTIC BELIEFS

We are each unique, but share similar fundamental needs.
We thrive and heal in nurturing relationships, but can be hurt by toxic ones.
We strive to fulfil our potential.
We are capable of growth and change.
We are self-governing and are responsible for ourselves.

In recognition of the uniqueness of each individual, I am aware that needs and expectations also differ from client to client. I aim to address that by offering a kind of therapy that draws from various evidence-based disciplines within the counselling framework, that may include some creative, and educational work, as well as talking therapy.

I also strongly believe that it is the strength of the relationship between client and therapist that provides the solid foundation for the work. This stems from my genuine interest in you and your issues. I do not judge, diagnose or label. I am always authentic and respectful.

I am also mindful that we humans are more than the sum of our parts and therefore take a holistic view that incorporates the emotional, psychological, physical and spiritual implications of you and view it in the context of your current life circumstances. I do not see myself as the expert in the room, but as someone who walks alongside you in your quest for deeper awareness of self and others.

                                CHRONIC FATIGUE/FIBROMYALGIA

I offer Wellbeing Coaching when work with Chronic Fatigue. Coaching differs from Counselling & Psychotherapy, it is more future focussed and goal oriented. This work is conducted in collaboration with The Chrysalis Effect Online Recovery Programme (CEORP)

I look forward to hearing from you.

Testimonials

"Life was spiralling out of control, everything was getting too much and my anxiety was unmanageable"

I learned not only the skills to manage my anxiety but finding the root causes and work on them individually. The power passed to me to say NO! has been a game changer and reduced my stress dramatically.

Getting an understanding of the mental and physical effects of anxiety has enabled me to recognise the early warning signs and deal with them before they take over".

Jay will always have a special part of my heart and I will be forever grateful for our time together"

Member organisations

BACP
British Association for Counselling & Psychotherapy (BACP)

BACP is one of the UK’s leading professional bodies for counselling and psychotherapy with around 60,000 members. The Association has several different categories of membership, including Student Member, Individual Member, Registered Member MBACP, Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Accred) and Senior Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Snr Acccred).

Registered and accredited members are listed on the BACP Register, which shows that they have demonstrated BACP’s recommended standards for training, proficiency and ethical practice. The BACP Register was the first register of psychological therapists to be accredited by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA).

Accredited and senior accredited membership are voluntary categories for members who choose to undertake a rigorous application and assessment process to demonstrate additional standards around practice, training and supervision.

Individual members will have completed an appropriate counselling or psychotherapy course and started to practise, but they won’t appear on the BACP Register until they've demonstrated that they meet the standards for registration. Student members are still in the process of completing their training.

All members are bound by the BACP Ethical Framework and a Professional Conduct Procedure.

Further information

My original motivation for studying Counselling and Psychotherapy stems from my personal experience of living with someone who had emotional and mental health issues and my later my extensive experience as a nurse in mainstream medicine.

During my time as a nurse I became aware, intrigued and then frustrated by how our current medical model splits mind from body, creating a disconnect between the psychological, physical and spiritual aspects of human experiencing and wellbeing.

From my personal and professional experience, there appears to be little understanding or acknowledgment of how our minds and bodies are inextricably linked and work symbiotically to maintain the balance between them.

This has led to my interest in the area of Chronic Fatigue (CFS) Myalgic Encephomyelitis (ME) and Fibromyalgia (FM) also known as Chronic Exhaustive Conditions (CEC) or Medically Unexplained Symptoms (MUS) and is founded on my personal experience of becoming severely incapacitated and my long journey back to good health.
