About me

Hello and welcome. Thank you for visiting at what I realise may be a challenging time for you.

My name is Philippa Crunden and I am a qualified therapeutic counsellor supporting people who are anxious or grieving, frightened, lonely, struggling with depression or in distress. You may feel unsure about where to turn or who to turn to. I offer a confidential space where you can feel safe, understood and trusted as you start to explore the reasons why you feel as you do.

I offer face to face appointments, online appointments (via Zoom) and telephone counselling.

I also offer Walk & Talk therapy. Being outside in nature has been proven to have huge psychological benefits and the natural environment can create a calming backdrop to any issues you might have, sometimes making it easier to express your feelings. So if you live in the Twickenham/Teddington area and this appeals to you, please contact me.

In my day to day counselling, I work with clients suffering from the impact of relationship breakdowns, family estrangement, sadness, grief, anxiety and depression. I work with those who suffer from low self-esteem, clients who are dealing with bereavement and those struggling with addiction. I work with adults and young people aged 17+

I work with anybody who has struggled with the impact of the pandemic.

Talking about your difficulties and working them through in a counselling can help you see things from a different perspective and help you to know yourself better. I believe that every one of us has the capacity to change and become the best they can be.

How I work

I am integrative in my approach which means that our work together will be specifically tailored to you, recognising that every client is unique. I draw on a range of knowledge and skills, adapting my approach to suit your individual needs.

I know that taking the first step to make contact requires courage at a time when you may feel anything but courageous. However, I will offer you the opportunity to safely share your concerns and worries so that we may work together as you find your way through.

What is most important is that our relationship will be at the heart of how we work together, helping you face the issues that you bring to me. I will listen to you carefully and work with you without judgement. Whatever your situation, I will offer you the support you need.

Training, qualifications & experience

I have a postgraduate Diploma in Therapeutic Integrative Counselling and am a registered member of the the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy (BACP). I subscribe to their ethical code of practice.

In addition to my private practice, I have gained extensive experience working as a counsellor for an addictions charity. I have comprehensive knowledge and understanding of the emotional trauma around addiction - both from the client’s point of view and also the families and friends who struggle to support the individual. I have considerable understanding of 12 Step recovery programmes.

I also hold a postgraduate teaching degree and, prior to training as a counsellor, I worked for many years as a teacher and mentor in London secondary schools. This has given me a deep understanding and interest in the difficulties and challenges faced by young people today in this constantly changing world,

Member organisations

BACP
British Association for Counselling & Psychotherapy (BACP)

BACP is one of the UK’s leading professional bodies for counselling and psychotherapy with around 60,000 members. The Association has several different categories of membership, including Student Member, Individual Member, Registered Member MBACP, Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Accred) and Senior Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Snr Acccred).

Registered and accredited members are listed on the BACP Register, which shows that they have demonstrated BACP’s recommended standards for training, proficiency and ethical practice. The BACP Register was the first register of psychological therapists to be accredited by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA).

Accredited and senior accredited membership are voluntary categories for members who choose to undertake a rigorous application and assessment process to demonstrate additional standards around practice, training and supervision.

Individual members will have completed an appropriate counselling or psychotherapy course and started to practise, but they won’t appear on the BACP Register until they've demonstrated that they meet the standards for registration. Student members are still in the process of completing their training.

All members are bound by the BACP Ethical Framework and a Professional Conduct Procedure.

Accredited register membership

British Association for Counselling & Psychotherapy
Accredited Register Scheme

The Accredited Register Scheme was set up in 2013 by the Department of Health (DoH) as a way to recognise organisations that hold voluntary registers which meet certain standards. These standards are set by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA).

This therapist has indicated that they belong to an Accredited Register.

Further information

The first meeting - what to expect

Finding the right therapist can feel challenging and even daunting and I aim to make the process as straightforward as possible.

Our first meeting will give you the chance to explore why you feel therapy might be right for you and what brings you to counselling. I will support you and make the process as easy and relaxed as possible for you. Above all, it’s important that you feel safe and held in the counselling space as we get to know each other.

You may have lots of questions and this is a useful time to look at your hopes and expectations. The first meeting also allows you time to reflect on whether counselling is the right step for you at this time and I will support you in whatever you decide to do.

At the end of this session, if we are both happy to proceed, our work together can begin.
