About me

Who Am I?

Hi, I'm Natalie and I became a counsellor after having counselling myself quite a few years ago.  I suffered a bereavement that changed my life.  I thought I could handle it on my own, and believe me, I tried.  It worked for a while, I used work to avoid talking, got a bit emotional at times, but I suppose I switched off.  I tried the technique of making myself feel better by going out, buying stuff, having my hair done, it was ok for the short term, but I still felt alone with my grief.  Then one day it hit me, and finally I saw a counsellor, started talking and here I am now.  That's me!

So what happens in that first session?  I start by asking you to read and sign my contract.  This outlines rules of confidentiality, data protection and a little about the therapy and what's involved.  Next, I take basic information from you: your name, address and if you've ever seen a therapist before.  Finally I ask the question, 'What brings you to counselling?'  That's when you talk and I listen.  The first session I always describe as like a a spare room or loft; full up with stuff that needs sorting.  Clients often apologise in the first session because they have (metaphorically) emptied all their stuff onto the therapy room floor.  This is good, because each session will explore different issues and place the 'stuff' into little boxes neatly in your mind, where you can access when you need, rather than having it at the front of your mind all of the time.

The Power is in the Room:  When you talk in a safe counselling space, the power is in the room, you hearing what you are saying; hearing what you have been through.  I then reflect this back to you for extra impact and also use honesty and questioning (when needed).  Sometimes clients just speak for the whole session.  This is exactly what they need to do.  Everyone is different and will work in different ways.  Being a person centred counsellor, I will help you find ways to explore and analyse your issues.

You Will Change:  The therapy doesn't only take place in the room, you will notice changes outside the room, in everyday life.  You may start to talk about things you hadn't been able to before.  Your mind may open up to other peoples' behaviours and realise it's them, not you.  People may see changes in you, and tell you.  You will change from the inside out!

It's Hard Work!  Lastly, therapy can be scary, it's hard work, draining, emotional; but worth it.  I am talking from experience when I say this.  I know what it's like to sit in a counsellors chair and show vulnerability.  But with vulnerability comes strength, and this is why I am now doing a job that I am very passionate about.  I want to help other people the way I was helped.
