Meg Hughes, Dip. Psych, MBACP, Counselling, Psychotherapy, Supervision
How can counselling help me?
When we are experiencing hard times it can be incredibly daunting to take those first steps towards help and support. This is where counselling or 'talking therapies' may be able to help.
My aim is to provide you with a professional, confidential counselling service in a safe, calm and compassionate environment. Here I can help you to fully explore your experiences and difficulties, identify what you would like instead and the options available to you to reach your goals so that you may live a happier and more fulfilled life.
Why choose me?
I have worked as a counsellor since 2009 and before that as a secondary school teacher. I have extensive experience of successfully working face to face and over the phone with adults, couples, children and young people (11yrs +). I am particularly experienced and interested in working with:-
- Relationship & Family Issues
- Trauma and its long term impact
- Bereavement, Loss & Grief
- Childhood & Adult Sexual Abuse
- Domestic Abuse
- Low self-esteem
- Low self-confidence
- New Parenting Skills
- Work and School Stress
I primarily utilise a branch of psychotherapy known as Transactional Analysis which can be modified and used in many different ways depending on your individual needs. I also draw upon and integrate different techniques from my Continual Professional Development training so as to tailor my approach to you as a unique individual.
These include Brainspotting; Emotional Freedom Techniques (EFT); Inner Child Healing; Focusing; Mindfulness, Applied Relaxation & Guided Imagery; Drawing & Talking; Sand Play Therapy; Grounding, Self-compassion and Self-care strategies.
I am very passionate about empowering you with more knowledge and understanding about your experiences and increasing self-awareness/self-care through a holistic approach enabling you to have healthier perspectives of your life.
Please see 'Any further info' section to read testimonials from my clients and their experiences of counselling with me.
What to expect - The initial session?
I offer you a free no-obligation first session. This is an opportunity to meet and talk through the difficulties you are currently experiencing. You can ask any questions and I will explain how I work. We can then decide if we wish to work together. I am happy to refer you to other therapists if needed.
How long will I need to come for?
I offer both short, medium or long term therapy to suit your needs. The number of sessions that you might have varies from person to person. It is entirely up to you to decide the longevity of your therapy and we will regularly review our work together so that you can get the most out of your sessions.
Sessions are usually weekly or fortnightly.
Please feel free to contact me to arrange an initial appointment or to ask any questions.

Testimonials from past and present clients:
'I started working with Meg at a difficult time, when I knew that I needed help but was very resistant to accepting it. I needed a therapist who I could respect and a model that had rigour. Meg provides both. I feel independent and really 'me' for the first time in my life.
'After having therapy with Meg for just a few months I can honestly say that I have made more progress within myself than ever before in my 42 years of life. Meg has helped me to deepen my understanding of who I am and with her support and guidance I have expanded my self awareness and started upon a path that I have been searching for my whole life.'
'Words cannot fully express how much working with Meg has helped me, both in my personal life and career. During some of the roughest points of my life our therapeutic relationship has given me hope, comfort, and stability when I had lost them and needed them so greatly. More than anything, our discussions helped me see my needs clearly as well as my own resources to cope and the stability and comfort I had forgotten I have within myself.'
'Through therapy with Meg I have a much better relationship with my partner, my children, my parents and friends. I'm more self aware, which means I notice when I'm upset, and can then work out what's going on and do something to help myself feel better. I accept myself more as I am, and am happier in my own skin. Being more accepting of myself means I'm more open and authentic with others, which in turn allows other people to be more open and authentic with me.'
'It was great to be really listened to without judgement. I could see everything much clearer and that helped me to decide what I wanted to do'
'Meg has helped me to stop obsessing over the past and worrying so much about the future. She has supported me to come to terms with difficult past experiences, and to leave them behind where they belong. Meg has also helped me move away from harmful coping strategies and develop healthy ways of dealing with scary feelings. I feel lighter as a result and more able to live in the here and now. I trust myself to be able to face whatever life throws at me, by taking care of myself and asking others for support when I need to.'
