About me

Are you struggling with a relationship that has left you feeling criticised and not appreciated? Do you feel that your needs, wishes and views are not important? Perhaps you even feel unsafe? Is there someone in your life who is belittling, excluding, bullying, abusing or trying to control you? Have you been trying to make the relationship work, maybe by speaking and behaving in certain ways that feel uncomfortable for you but which you hope will help you to ‘fit in’ or keep the peace? You may hope that your attempts to resolve the conflict may improve things, but instead you find yourself thinking and behaving in ways which do not reflect who you really are?

These things can occur in any relationship - intimate, friendships, work or in places of fatih - and can leave us feeling confused, anxious and upset. While these are normal responses, they can be hard to live with and can have an adverse impact on our health, wellbing and wider relationships. Workplace bullying can even threaten our economic survival.

How can I help you? I have personal experience of some of these issues and so can draw on my lived experience to assist you to process what you are going through.  I have studied and trained in how to support people who have experienced bullying and abuse, and this was the topic of my MA dissertation. I am also a trauma-informed practitioner who is able to help you cope with and process what has happened to you.

Prior to becoming a counsellor, I had a long career in corporate HR and then ran my own business, so I can really connect with workplace stress, especially when combined with juggling the needs of home life.

I am also experienced in working with those who have been bereaved or who have suffered other significant losses such as separation, divorce, redundancy, loss of health or death of a pet. These can leave us feeling sad, isolated, and worried about how we are going to cope. I too have been through loss and so can really understand what it is like.

I will offer you a warm, welcoming, non-judgemental and supportive space in which you can explore and work through your difficulties to help you become more confident, more true to yourself and to lead a fuller and more fulfilling life.  Clients have told me that I am understanding and that they feel safe with me.

If you would like to take the next step and explore counselling with me, I offer a free 30 minute consultation on Zoom so where we can meet and decide if we are a ‘good fit’. To arrange this, please email me at lynn.hickman63@protonmail.com. You can also visit my website  https://www.ridethewavescounselling.co.uk which contains a form through which you can contact me. Please note that I am currently working on Zoom only.

It will be lovely to hear from you!

Member organisations

BACP
British Association for Counselling & Psychotherapy (BACP)

BACP is one of the UK’s leading professional bodies for counselling and psychotherapy with around 60,000 members. The Association has several different categories of membership, including Student Member, Individual Member, Registered Member MBACP, Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Accred) and Senior Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Snr Acccred).

Registered and accredited members are listed on the BACP Register, which shows that they have demonstrated BACP’s recommended standards for training, proficiency and ethical practice. The BACP Register was the first register of psychological therapists to be accredited by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA).

Accredited and senior accredited membership are voluntary categories for members who choose to undertake a rigorous application and assessment process to demonstrate additional standards around practice, training and supervision.

Individual members will have completed an appropriate counselling or psychotherapy course and started to practise, but they won’t appear on the BACP Register until they've demonstrated that they meet the standards for registration. Student members are still in the process of completing their training.

All members are bound by the BACP Ethical Framework and a Professional Conduct Procedure.

ACC

The Association of Christian Counsellors and Linked Professions is a professional body representing and setting standards for Christian counselling and care in the UK. The organisation is made up of various different membership categories, including Counsellor and Accredited, and requires all members working as counsellors to undertake Continuous Professional Development on a regular basis.
