About me

Perhaps you are feeling isolated, frightened and overwhelmed, struggling with the impacts of the pandemic and worrying about your future. Maybe the intense strains of these unpredictable times, from climate chaos to witnessing genocides unforld online leave you feeling exhausted, depleted and frustrated, affecting your relationship to yourself and others. You might long for human relationships that feel nourishing and connected and crave a more just and equitable world. If this sounds like you and you are looking for support then I'd love to hear from you.

How Counselling Can Help

Speaking with someone who will be genuine and supportive can be a great help. By offering empathy and acceptance while carefully tuning in to how you experience your self, your relationships and the world around you, I can support you to understand your self more deeply, and develop, change and live more fully.

As a person-centred counsellor, I have seen that under the right conditions, people have the inner resources and potential to grow and flourish. When people are empowered and supported they can transform their lives. I also want to attend to the pain of living in a world where the conditions which support human growth and flourishing are often perceived, and experienced, to be rare.

You might be enduring very challenging circumstances and/or relationship dynamics which feel difficult to change and have a big impact on you. Get in touch with me and I will be honest with you about how challenging life can be, and I will support you to find your own way through.

How I Will Work With You

Building a trusting relationship together is central to my work. I strive to be honest, straightforward and respectful, and bring my personality, humanity and humour to my practice. Sometimes I will share my experience of working with and relating to you, and will invite you to do the same. This may help you to reflect on other relationships in your life, and consider how our therapeutic relationship is similar or different from them. Relating with greater honesty and clarity can help our work together to deepen.

My Approach

My development as a therapist has come from being fortunate to access deeply transformative support in the counselling chair myself, and in supervision. This has given me first-hand experience of the healing potential of the therapeutic relationship and enabled me to gain a deeper understanding of my own life experiences, personal process and counselling practice. I know how daunting it can be seeking support from a counsellor and reaching out for the first time, so I will be warm and welcoming when you contact me.

My practice continues to be shaped by being in friendships and community with courageous people who build emotionally intimate relationships with integrity; connecting wherever possible to the natural world; and engaging purposefully with organisers for transformative social change to build collective care.

I integrate an awareness of the psycho-emotional impact of systemic oppression in to my counselling practice, and pay close attention to the dynamics of power both in the counselling room and in the lives of those with whom I work. I will work to meet you with respect and support you to explore the intersections of your identities. I will support you with any issues that affect you without discriminating against you and I am an LGBTQIA+ affirmative therapist (meaning that I respect different sexualities, gender identities and relationship styles).

My Background

I have worked as a facilitator, trainer and conflict mediator in social justice movements since 2007. I am passionately committed to supporting people to explore their experiences, find meaning in their lives and identify their own ways through the problems they face. Through this work and my own experience as a campaigner and community organiser, I have honed an intuitive capacity to listen deeply, build safe and trusting relationships, and walk alongside people in their full experience of life.

A lot of my work has involved collaborating with and listening to people who experience multiple forms of marginalisation, and I am committed to making my counselling practice anti-oppressive and non-discriminatory, treating people with dignity and respect. This requires an active commitment to identifying the blind spots I have because of my own identity and position in society and working to dismantle my prejudices.

Training, qualifications & experience

I completed my Post-Graduate Diploma in Counselling & Psychotherapy in June 2019 (Persona Training & Development, awarded by the University of Aberdeen and accredited by the British Association of Counsellors & Psychotherapists).

I have experience of counselling in a community health agency and a service for people affected by drug use. I have worked with people from many different identities and backgrounds, facing a broad range of challenges. Accompanying people in the therapeutic relationship is something I deeply value, and this led me to establish my own private practice in the summer of 2020.

I am committed to participating in additional training and lifelong learning, particularly in the areas of trauma, embodiment, systemic oppression and collective care. I have completed training in Race & Counselling, Trans Competency for Health Practitioners, Class & Counselling, Working with Substance Use, Safeguarding, Trauma and Relational Depth.

I am a Registered Member of the British Association of Counsellors and Psychotherapists and a member of the Radical Therapists Network, which is dedicated to intersectional, trauma informed, anti-capitalist, anti-racist and anti-oppressive therapeutic practice.

Member organisations

BACP
British Association for Counselling & Psychotherapy (BACP)

BACP is one of the UK’s leading professional bodies for counselling and psychotherapy with around 60,000 members. The Association has several different categories of membership, including Student Member, Individual Member, Registered Member MBACP, Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Accred) and Senior Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Snr Acccred).

Registered and accredited members are listed on the BACP Register, which shows that they have demonstrated BACP’s recommended standards for training, proficiency and ethical practice. The BACP Register was the first register of psychological therapists to be accredited by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA).

Accredited and senior accredited membership are voluntary categories for members who choose to undertake a rigorous application and assessment process to demonstrate additional standards around practice, training and supervision.

Individual members will have completed an appropriate counselling or psychotherapy course and started to practise, but they won’t appear on the BACP Register until they've demonstrated that they meet the standards for registration. Student members are still in the process of completing their training.

All members are bound by the BACP Ethical Framework and a Professional Conduct Procedure.

Accredited register membership

The Accredited Register Scheme was set up in 2013 by the Department of Health (DoH) as a way to recognise organisations that hold voluntary registers which meet certain standards. These standards are set by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA).
