About me

Hi my name is Joy,

I can work with you ONLINE / REMOTELY via zoom or skype.

I've worked as a CBT Therapist in High Wycombe for 15 years. Having experienced depression in my mid-20s I know the dark thoughts and places it can take you ...Luckily I survived to fight another day.  So when I trained to be a Counsellor /CBT Therapist I wanted to specialise in treating anxiety & depression, as they are both debilitating and potentially life threatening illnesses.

I can also talk to you about the grief of a family member suicide. It is a very lonely, consuming and distressing experience.

If you're reading this perhaps you're experiencing:

  • STRESS
  • ANXIETY / PANIC ATTACKS
  • WORRY / "WHAT IF..." moments?
  • DEPRESSION / LOW MOODS

These emotional difficulties can :

  • stop you living your life to the full
  • stop you enjoying your career, personal relationships, and full health
  • and at their worst cause you to have thoughts of self-harm & suicide

LIVELY & INTERACTIVE Therapy:

Clients enjoy working with CBT strategies because: "It motivates you to take an active interest in weekly improvements to your emotional & psychological HEALTH."

For those who enjoy the feeling of "DOING SOMETHING" and not being a passive receiver, handouts and home tasks are set between sessions. These help sharpen your self-awareness, build your confidence, and openess to testing assumptions & beliefs. Gathering evidence in this way provide the brain with new information to reinforce or break engrained thoughts & beliefs.

BEHAVIOUR YOU SHOULD MONITOR

Human-beings are quite smart, so we find lots of temporary solutions to relieve our anxiety, stay in denial of our problems, and  mistakenly think these keep things under control, for example:

  • numbing feelings with alcohol, recreational drugs, pornography
  • taking days off work / working longer hours (workaholic)
  • sleeping more (avoidance & escape)
  • avoiding social situations or friends (isolating yourself)
  • smoking more cigarettes / cannabis etc
  • crying more than normal / listening to or watching sad music & films
  • self harming (cutting, hair pulling, punching walls etc)
  • Over-eating / comfort eating
  • obsessive compulsive behaviours (tidying, counting, checking, washing hands)

STRESS, ANXIETY, WORRY & DEPRESSION

...are highly treatable with cognitive behavioural techniques (CBT) in a relatively short period of time (from 4-12 weeks).

The solution starts with evaluating your current lifestyle and personal history, and being prepared to ask that big question '...WHY NOW'? what has triggered the problem(s) right now.

I help you review negative automatic thoughts (NATs) & beliefs, introduce more rational thinking habits, and understand the negative thought cycles driving your behaviour and keeping your 'stuck'.

Getting curious about yourself, and finding the courage to test-drive new  ideas, strategies & solutions can re-ignite your vitality, enthusiasm AND optimism about life.

"WE BECOME WHAT WE THINK" ... when we repeat certain ideas and beliefs about ourselves often enough, we make it a 'FACT' ...a reality. So I help you understand how you mis-interpret bodily sensations, generate negative thoughts, and use styles where you  delete & distort information, or make generalisations about events.

LEARNING ABOUT THE MIND & BODY ...the ideas no one taught you at school will create light bulb moments. Looking at your beliefs &  early family history, will have a positive impact on the way you interact with people.

HOW DO I WORK? and WHO DO I WORK WITH?

During  weekly hourly sessions I blend elements of :

  • Cognitive Behavioural therapy CBT (solution focused, short-term)
  • Person-Centred counselling (short to long term)
  • Life Coaching (solution focused, short-term)

I work in a relaxed, solution-focused & creative way with adults +18years and over experiencing emotional & physical difficulties with - Anxiety, Stress & Depression.

SPECIALISING IN WORKING WITH MEN

I have widened my knowledge of the issues and experiences that men face. Men have a different way of handling stress and depression which is not widely recognised. Anger, irritability and becoming a workaholic are important signs to look out for.

I WORK ONLINE / REMOTELY :
ZOOM (video conference software)

  • I use email /text support between sessions when needed
  • PLUS provide written sessional feedback and information sheets on specific mental health topics.
  • I set home-tasks to help you test out new ideas & behaviours
  • I send motivating email/ text messages as and when needed
  • I use Mood & Thought Diaries / recognised Questionnaires to monitor anxiety & depression
  • Psychological-Education is important : so I supplement this with information on useful websites & instructions on relaxation techniques & breathing techniques.

Registered / Accredited

Being registered/accredited with a professional body means an individual must have achieved a substantial level of training and experience approved by their member organisation.

BACP
British Association for Counselling & Psychotherapy (BACP)

BACP is one of the UK’s leading professional bodies for counselling and psychotherapy with around 60,000 members. The Association has several different categories of membership, including Student Member, Individual Member, Registered Member MBACP, Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Accred) and Senior Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Snr Acccred).

Registered and accredited members are listed on the BACP Register, which shows that they have demonstrated BACP’s recommended standards for training, proficiency and ethical practice. The BACP Register was the first register of psychological therapists to be accredited by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA).

Accredited and senior accredited membership are voluntary categories for members who choose to undertake a rigorous application and assessment process to demonstrate additional standards around practice, training and supervision.

Individual members will have completed an appropriate counselling or psychotherapy course and started to practise, but they won’t appear on the BACP Register until they've demonstrated that they meet the standards for registration. Student members are still in the process of completing their training.

All members are bound by the BACP Ethical Framework and a Professional Conduct Procedure.

Accredited register membership
