About me

John Maguire MSc. PG Dip. Dip CPC. MBACP (Accred). I am highly specialised in dealing with men's issues including violence, sexual trauma recovery, worrying of frightening sexual interests, pornography issues, fear of the world and fear of self. Men are still dealing with the message that emotions equal weakness; 'big boys don't cry'.

I provide a respectful, unthreatening space where together we can counter that message. Sessions costs £70.00 however limited lower cost sessions are available;  I try to make counselling as affordable as possible for those on the lowest incomes and can be flexible around number or length of sessions to limit the financial impact. Home visits may be available in certain limited circumstances.

Mens therapy groups and mixed-sex groups are available. Groups for those suffering with porn addiction or other sexual issues can be arranged. I have previously provided Counselling, Psychotherapy & Clinical Supervision with Mankind UK, Sussex & Surrey Probation Service, Brighton University and Brighton & Hove Council as well as in my private practice.

My practice is based in the Newington Area on Minto Street. I have also taught Counselling at the University of Brighton, Edinburgh University and at Edinburgh College. My approach is mainly person-centred and psychodynamic, however, people come to therapy with goals and I keep focussed on those goals to help the clients get the growth they want.

I invite clients to stay active in their growth and often invite them to undertake tasks and exercises with therapy sessions, but these are only invitations and not compulsory. Email to discuss an initial assessment.

Registered / Accredited

Being registered/accredited with a professional body means an individual must have achieved a substantial level of training and experience approved by their member organisation.

BACP
British Association for Counselling & Psychotherapy (BACP)

BACP is one of the UK’s leading professional bodies for counselling and psychotherapy with around 60,000 members. The Association has several different categories of membership, including Student Member, Individual Member, Registered Member MBACP, Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Accred) and Senior Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Snr Acccred).

Registered and accredited members are listed on the BACP Register, which shows that they have demonstrated BACP’s recommended standards for training, proficiency and ethical practice. The BACP Register was the first register of psychological therapists to be accredited by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA).

Accredited and senior accredited membership are voluntary categories for members who choose to undertake a rigorous application and assessment process to demonstrate additional standards around practice, training and supervision.

Individual members will have completed an appropriate counselling or psychotherapy course and started to practise, but they won’t appear on the BACP Register until they've demonstrated that they meet the standards for registration. Student members are still in the process of completing their training.

All members are bound by the BACP Ethical Framework and a Professional Conduct Procedure.

COSCA
College of Sexual and Relationship Therapists (COSCA)

COSCA is the professional body for counselling and psychotherapy in Scotland, and seeks to advance all forms of counselling and psychotherapy and the use of counselling skills by promoting best practice and through the delivery of a range of sustainable services. COSCA Counsellor Accreditation is a pathway to entry onto the UKRC.

It is a requirement of all individual and organisational members of COSCA to abide by its Statement of Ethics and Code of Practice and be accountable to the Complaints Procedure. Accredited by the Professional Standards Authority.
