About me
Hello and welcome, my name is Dr Jessica McCarrick (Jess). I am a HCPC registered Counselling Psychologist and I provide psychological assessment and therapy to adults experiencing difficulties with their mental health and wellbeing. I specialise in working with individuals who find themselves repeating unhelpful patterns which impact on their feelings about themselves and their relationships with others.
I am based in the North East of England and have a therapy room in Middlesbrough for face to face work. I am also able to provide online therapy and I am therefore able to work with those who live further afield.
I uphold a high standard of care in accordance with the British Psychological Society and Health Care Professions Council's ethical and professional codes of conduct.
It can be daunting taking the first step to reach out for help, so if you decide you would like to take the next step and speak with me for a free 20 minute consultation then I would welcome you reaching out. Distress is a universal human experience, however we are all unique within that, so I will listen to your experiences without judgement and discuss our next steps from there. During this consultation, I encourage you to ask me some questions and I can talk through what I could provide.
Training, qualifications & experience
Experience
I am a Chartered Counselling Psychologist, registered with the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC). The HCPC is a professional body who set and monitor professional standards and take appropriate actions if professionals are not meeting those standards.
I have experience working (and volunteering) in different settings, including the NHS, the independent sector, private practice and the third sector and have worked with people across the lifespan.
I have worked with people with difficulties including depression, anxiety, bereavement, low mood, attachment difficulties, childhood trauma, relationship difficulties, post-traumatic stress, adjusting to physical health conditions, body image issues, low self-esteem and self-harm. I continue to work part-time as a Highly Specialised Counselling Psychologist in the NHS alongside my private practice.
I have also worked as a Senior Lecturer on a Doctorate in Counselling Psychology course where I taught trainee Counselling Psychologists and supervised academic research at doctoral level. I have conducted research which has been published in academic journals and wrote published book chapters about my research and clinical work in the NHS.
I am passionate about maintaining and learning new skills to enhance my understanding of people and human distress. Currently, I am undertaking further post-graduate training to become a Cognitive Analytic Therapy (CAT) practitioner. CAT is a type of evidence-based psychological therapy which looks at our relationship patterns in our past and present lives and how these patterns may be contributing to our current difficulties.
What I can offer
My background training includes a range of therapeutic models including Cognitive Behaviour Therapy and Integrative psychological therapy. I draw upon different psychological models including Compassion Focused Therapy and Acceptance and Commitment Therapy and tailor this to the needs of the client in a time frame which suits the individual. I believe it is important to adapt to individual needs and have regular reviews to help guide the treatment plan we develop.
I believe in the primary importance of developing a trusting, therapeutic relationship. I consider myself to be a relational therapist in that I seek to understand how the relationships in our lives influence our wellbeing. I am passionate about working alongside people and I endeavour to provide a safe, warm and compassionate space for you to begin working towards your aims.

They keep a register of health professionals who meet their standards, and they take action if registered health professionals fall below those standards. They were created by a piece of legislation called the Health Professions Order 2001.
