The Bloomsbury Therapy Practice

The Bloomsbury Therapy Practice provides Cognitive Behaviour Therapy (CBT) Counselling and Eye-Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing (EMDR) in a confidential space in the heart of Bloomsbury. The practice is passionate about demystifying myths surrounding therapy and is committed to helping individuals gain a greater understanding of mental health in order to overcome difficulties and enhance well-being in their personal and professional lives.

I am a qualified Counselling Psychologist who uses an integrative approach based on your needs. I draw from a variety of evidence-based therapeutic models, including Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), Psychodynamic and Humanistic Therapy and Mindfulness. I offer Eye Desensitisation and Reprocessing (EMDR) an efficient and effective treatment method for Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) and trauma.

I provide long or short term therapy depending on your needs. Some common issues I work with are anxiety, (including panic, health, and phobias), Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD), Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), sexual abuse, trauma, relationship issues, identity, and self-esteem, eating disorders, depression, Long Term Health Conditions, and work-related stress.

I work with adults experiencing mild to complex mental health problems, I have also facilitated group work. I am committed to tailoring the therapy session to meet the unique needs of my clients. I offer therapy in a time-limited, goal-orientated approach or over a longer time frame according to individual needs. I value working collaboratively and respectfully with my clients and providing a compassionate space that is focused on the specific needs of my clients,

I am trained in and have worked with a variety of therapeutic models. I draw upon a variety of evidence-based therapeutic models, including Cognitive Behavioural Therapy, Psychodynamic, Solution-Focused, Humanistic Therapy, and Mindfulness-based approaches. I use EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitisation & Re-Processing) and Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT) informed treatment for trauma and other complex needs. Where appropriate, I  also draw on Feeling and Ego State approaches.

My areas of speciality include; Trauma, Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), depression and anxiety, Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD), Body Dysmorphic Disorder (BDD) Health anxiety, Social phobia, Sexual abuse, Bereavement, Self-esteem issues, and Relationship problems.

I have undertaken various training on Long Term Conditions and Medically Unexplained Symptoms such as Chronic Fatigue Syndrome, Irritable Bowel Syndrome, and Pain Management. Her research interest lies in the use of mindfulness as a clinical intervention and the use of EMDR in treating trauma.

I am a fully accredited EMDR Europe Accredited Practitioner who trained with Sandi-Richman, Consultant Psychologist, past president of the EMDR UK and Ireland Association. I use EMDR in the treatment of Trauma and complex needs, my work is informed by the NICE (National Institute for Health and Care Excellence) evidence-based therapeutic intervention guidelines.

Training, qualifications & experience

Dr Jennifer Opoku is an experienced Chartered Counselling Psychologist with over 13 years of experience in the field. She has worked in a variety of NHS and private settings with adults experiencing mild to complex mental health problems. Jennifer worked for Essex Partnership NHS Foundation Trust for over 10 years as a senior therapist and clinical supervisor.

Jennifer is a Chartered Counselling Psychologist registered with the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC) and the British Psychological Society (BPS) and an accredited EMDR practitioner.

Jennifer has a Doctorate in Counselling Psychology from City University, London and a Bachelor of Science in Psychology from Westminster University, London.

HCPC

Health and Care Professions Council

The HCPC are an independent, UK-wide health regulator. They set standards of professional training, performance and conduct for 16 professions.

They keep a register of health professionals who meet their standards, and they take action if registered health professionals fall below those standards. They were created by a piece of legislation called the Health Professions Order 2001.

Registration means that a health professional meets national standards for their professional training, performance and conduct.

Fees

I am a highly qualified Psychologists who use evidence-based treatment methods to help you get to the core of the problem quicker, the fees, therefore, reflect the quality of the work I offer.

Fees range from £130-160 for a session.

Different fees apply for insurance companies.

Sessions are 50 minutes.
