About me

I am a psychotherapist working with adults within the NHS and in private practice, offering psychodynamic psychotherapy and EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing).
I have 16 years of experience in different mental health settings, as a volunteer, mental health nurse and psychotherapist.

Training, qualifications & experience

I have undergone many years of extensive and rigorous NHS psychodynamic psychotherapy training, requiring trainees to have personal psychotherapy for the duration of their training. Having learnt first-hand what clients may experience, I understand that seeking support for mental health and finding a therapist to work with can feel daunting. It can feel challenging to know where to start, and navigating your thoughts and emotions can be overwhelming.

Where to start?
Clients often express feeling uncertain about where to begin. In our initial meeting, we will work together to explore your goals and desires for therapy, exploring the approach that may best support you.  We will also openly explore whether working together is a good 'fit', including how you feel during the session and whether my therapeutic approaches can best meet your requirements. If we decide to work together, my diverse background has equipped me with the skills to effectively support individuals facing various challenges, tailoring and adapting the therapeutic approach according to client needs.

Therapeutic approach
I offer psychodynamic psychotherapy, providing a safe and confidential space to explore aspects such as your relationships, your experience of life, and how you see yourself. Psychodynamic psychotherapy is an open-ended treatment in that the duration of treatment is thought about between the client and therapist. Each session lasts 50 minutes and occurs on the same day and time.

I also offer EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing). EMDR is a shorter-term therapy, usually 6-12 sessions. EMDR is recognised by the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) and the World Health Organisation (WHO) as a psychotherapy treatment for trauma or post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Now, EMDR is used to help with a range of mental health difficulties. Sessions last up to 90 minutes. EMDR is increasingly sought, reflecting increased media coverage of its impact as a shorter-term psychotherapy. Clients have benefited from EMDR to address wide ranging concerns, such as relationship breakups, difficult birth experiences, feeling ‘stuck’, anxiety, low mood, traumatic incidents, and low self-esteem.

Whether you are struggling with anxiety, questioning your identity, or feeling stuck in unhelpful patterns, I am here to explore your unconscious and conscious mind. I have successfully worked with clients dealing with issues ranging from depression, low self-esteem, body dysphoria, anxiety, OCD, grief and loss, and relationship difficulties to intrusive thoughts or feeling 'stuck' in life. Clients have welcomed an opportunity to think deeply about their experiences, identity, or goals, perhaps for the first time able to prioritise their needs and focus on themselves.

If you feel ready to explore starting therapy, there are two ways to contact me: by email at hh@helenhaddentherapy.com or by booking an introductory call.

Member organisations

Registered / Accredited

Registered / Accredited

Being registered/accredited with a professional body means an individual must have achieved a substantial level of training and experience approved by their member organisation.

BPC
British Psychoanalytic Council (BPC)

The British Psychoanalytic Council (BPC) is a professional association, representing the profession of psychoanalytic psychotherapy.

The organisation is itself made up of fourteen member organisations and BPC accredits the trainings of its member organisations. An individual who qualifies from one of these trainings is then eligible for entry into the BPC's register.

BPC registrants are governed by a code of ethics, a policy of continuing professional development, a statement on confidentiality and a complaints procedure. The BPC is a Member Society of the European Federation for Psychoanalytic Psychotherapy in the Public Sector (EFPP). Accredited by the Professional Standards Authority.

The Accredited Register Scheme was set up in 2013 by the Department of Health (DoH) as a way to recognise organisations that hold voluntary registers which meet certain standards. These standards are set by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA).

Further information

I will guide our discussion a little more during our initial session than during regular sessions. We will discuss different aspects of your life, such as your concerns, history, and goals. This helps me to understand your unique situation.

If we determine that psychodynamic psychotherapy is the most suitable approach for you,  we will discuss practical aspects, such as confidentiality, boundaries, and any questions or concerns you may have.  We establish a clear and mutually agreed-upon framework for our therapeutic work together.

This is the start of building a therapeutic relationship, creating a safe and non-judgmental space where you can openly express your thoughts, feelings, and experiences.

During sessions, we will start to think about unconscious and conscious processes, exploring how past experiences may influence your current thoughts, emotions, and behaviours.

If we decide to work using EMDR, therapy also starts by providing a safe space to explore so that we can decide together on aspects to address. EMDR can help clients process intrusive and distressing events and memories, as it facilitates the mind's capacity to heal. EMDR is carried out using a carefully researched protocol; I will guide you through each step of the process. Clients can also choose not to share the memory or event they wish to process with the therapist if they prefer. EMDR works well face-to-face or online.
