About me

Feeling anxious, stuck, overwhelmed or unhappy with life? Whatever issues are causing you to seek counselling, we can explore these together to understand them better, clarify what you want to see change & find the next steps to make those changes. I have over 25 years’ experience of supporting people through difficulties, including many years of doing so online & by phone. I qualified as a social worker in 1996 and then trained as a counsellor and psychotherapist. I have worked with young people in care, families and, for 18 years, with survivors of trauma and abuse so I am able to be alongside people in the messiness and distress of life and provide caring and skillfull insight and support.

Common issues I can provide help with

These include anxiety & depression; family and relationship problems; loss; managing difficult feelings & chronic stress; difficulties / trauma in childhood; domestic abuse / trauma in adulthood;  problems with confidence and social relationships, family & parenting issues.

I offer a free phone consultation to help you decide if you would like to meet. My sessions are 60 minute long and in addition to daytime appointments, I offer some early morning and evening ones.

How I work

I am a warm, empathic therapist and will work in a collaborative way to create a sense of safety so that you can express what is really going on inside, especially things that are complicated or hard to put into words.

I adapt my approach to your needs, carefully listening & noticing so you feel really heard & seen. This can include different therapeutic approaches including 'psychodynamic' (looking at the impact of the past on the present), mindfulness based cognitive approaches (noticing thoughts and feelings and practicing different ways of relating and responding); using creative approaches (visual, writing etc...) to unlock feelings that are stuck;  & nervous system/ body-based approaches (understanding and working to regulate our stress / threat responses).

I see clients as the experts in their own lives & my job is to understand you so that together we find a pathway through what is happening.

Training, qualifications & experience

I am a BACP registered and accredited psychotherapist and counsellor. I have an MSc in Mental Health Studies, a PG Diploma in Counselling and Psychotherapy (both with distinction) and a Diploma in Social Work (I qualified as a social worker in 1996 and worked with children and young people in the care system and prison for many years, later training specifically in the mental health field). I am certified to teach mindfulness and to deliver the Safe and Sound protocol based on Polyvagal nervous system approach. Having worked with survivors of violence & abuse for many years, my style of working is very relational & trauma-informed.

In addition to my psychotherapy and counselling practice, I am an artist and also the co-founder of an organisation for people who have experienced trauma and abuse and for over 18 years have helped to facilitate support groups. I have also worked on the NAPAC national helpline and am experienced in supporting people who have lived through various forms of trauma, childhood abuse, domestic violence and sexual assault.

I am fully insured, ensure all client information is maintained securely and abide by the British Association of Counselling & Psychotherapy Code of Ethics.

Registered / Accredited

Being registered/accredited with a professional body means an individual must have achieved a substantial level of training and experience approved by their member organisation.

BACP
British Association for Counselling & Psychotherapy (BACP)

BACP is one of the UK’s leading professional bodies for counselling and psychotherapy with around 60,000 members. The Association has several different categories of membership, including Student Member, Individual Member, Registered Member MBACP, Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Accred) and Senior Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Snr Acccred).

Registered and accredited members are listed on the BACP Register, which shows that they have demonstrated BACP’s recommended standards for training, proficiency and ethical practice. The BACP Register was the first register of psychological therapists to be accredited by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA).

Accredited and senior accredited membership are voluntary categories for members who choose to undertake a rigorous application and assessment process to demonstrate additional standards around practice, training and supervision.

Individual members will have completed an appropriate counselling or psychotherapy course and started to practise, but they won’t appear on the BACP Register until they've demonstrated that they meet the standards for registration. Student members are still in the process of completing their training.

All members are bound by the BACP Ethical Framework and a Professional Conduct Procedure.

The Accredited Register Scheme was set up in 2013 by the Department of Health (DoH) as a way to recognise organisations that hold voluntary registers which meet certain standards. These standards are set by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA).
