About me

Searching for the right counsellor can feel daunting. How do you know which one to choose, and who you will be comfortable with? It's a big decision.

Let me tell you a little about me and the way I work. I am a dedicated and compassionate psychodynamic counsellor, a member of the British Association of Counsellors and Psychotherapists (BACP) and the British Psychoanalytic Council (BPC).

I believe that our past experiences shape who we are today and that by uncovering and understanding unconscious behaviours and choices, we can gain insight and self-awareness, and light the way for future growth.

Psychodynamic Counselling stems from Psychoanalysis and can illuminate previously unconscious ways of thinking and relating to others. Making these patterns more conscious can help untie us from deep-seated difficulties and open up new ways of seeing things and experiencing the world.

Psychodynamic Counselling is not about giving advice or setting targets, but about providing a safe space to explore your thoughts and feelings in a way which will help you understand yourself more fully. Perhaps you know why you are seeking counselling, or maybe you feel anxious or unsettled in life and need help to unpick how you have found yourself at your current juncture.

The therapeutic relationship should be one in which you feel comfortable sharing whatever is on your mind, without judgement, allowing free association. It is important that you feel that comfortable with your chosen therapist and that Psychodynamic Counselling is the right modality for you. For this reason, I offer a 15 minute telephone consultation prior to our first meeting.

Training, qualifications & experience

  • Pre Clinical Psychotherapy Courses at Severnside Institute for Psychotherapy
  • Foundation in Psychodynamic Counselling - Wessex Counselling and Psychotherapy
  • Diploma in Psychodynamic Counselling - Wessex Counselling and Psychotherapy

I have experience working with a range of issues, including relationship difficulties, anxiety, depression, issues with identity, childhood sexual abuse, domestic violence, loss and bereavement and physical illness. However, I believe that each client is completely unique and comes with their own individual identity and narrative.

I currently work in private practice in Bristol on Mondays and Tuesdays as well as in a specialist trauma service.

Member organisations

Registered / Accredited

Registered / Accredited

Being registered/accredited with a professional body means an individual must have achieved a substantial level of training and experience approved by their member organisation.

BPC
British Psychoanalytic Council (BPC)

The British Psychoanalytic Council (BPC) is a professional association, representing the profession of psychoanalytic psychotherapy.

The organisation is itself made up of fourteen member organisations and BPC accredits the trainings of its member organisations. An individual who qualifies from one of these trainings is then eligible for entry into the BPC's register.

BPC registrants are governed by a code of ethics, a policy of continuing professional development, a statement on confidentiality and a complaints procedure. The BPC is a Member Society of the European Federation for Psychoanalytic Psychotherapy in the Public Sector (EFPP). Accredited by the Professional Standards Authority.

BACP
British Association for Counselling & Psychotherapy (BACP)

BACP is one of the UK’s leading professional bodies for counselling and psychotherapy with around 60,000 members. The Association has several different categories of membership, including Student Member, Individual Member, Registered Member MBACP, Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Accred) and Senior Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Snr Acccred).

Registered and accredited members are listed on the BACP Register, which shows that they have demonstrated BACP’s recommended standards for training, proficiency and ethical practice. The BACP Register was the first register of psychological therapists to be accredited by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA).

Accredited and senior accredited membership are voluntary categories for members who choose to undertake a rigorous application and assessment process to demonstrate additional standards around practice, training and supervision.

Individual members will have completed an appropriate counselling or psychotherapy course and started to practise, but they won’t appear on the BACP Register until they've demonstrated that they meet the standards for registration. Student members are still in the process of completing their training.

All members are bound by the BACP Ethical Framework and a Professional Conduct Procedure.

The Accredited Register Scheme was set up in 2013 by the Department of Health (DoH) as a way to recognise organisations that hold voluntary registers which meet certain standards. These standards are set by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA).
