About me
Hello! I'm Carys, the BACP registered counsellor behind Out of the Woods Counselling. I work with adults of all genders across the UK on a broad range of issues, although I have a special focus on working with anxiety, self-esteem and self-worth.
I offer integrative therapy, a combined approach that brings together different counselling psychotherapy theories. For me, this means I have a grounded therapy style in humanistic therapy which is accompanied by a willingness to carefully incorporate techniques from other therapeutic approaches.
You deserve a safe and supportive space to explore your thoughts, feelings and actions without judgement and I strive to co-create that with you. I offer a warm, compassionate and non-judgemental approach to therapy, based on the belief that every person is unique and has the potential for growth and change. I work collaboratively with you to develop a deeper understanding of yourself and your experiences.
Experience and areas of focus
I have experience of working with clients from a variety of backgrounds on a broad range of issues, but have a special interest in working with;
- anxiety
- self-esteem/self-worth
- issues related to gender and sexuality
- emerging adults/ early adulting
My Masters's degree in Psychotherapeutic Counselling included a research focus on sexual violence survivors' emotional expression in therapy. Prior to becoming a counsellor, I worked as a specialist sexual health outreach worker, working with youth, LGBT+ and sex work communities. Here, I developed my core values of inclusivity, empathy and autonomy that guide my work today.
Training, qualifications & experience
- MSc in Psychotherapeutic Counselling (Distinction) - Staffordshire University
- Certificate in Online and Telephone Counselling - ACTO
- BSc Psychology - Lancaster University
In addition to working in private practise, I have also worked within third sector counselling organisations, including a service serving survivors of sexual violence and a service supporting perinatal mental health difficulties.
I am a registered member of the BACP, and as such I work to the BACP Ethical Framework. Continuous professional development is an important part of my work and ethos - I am currently undertaking further training in the area of ADHD Strengths Based Interventions.
Member organisations
BACP is one of the UK’s leading professional bodies for counselling and psychotherapy with around 60,000 members. The Association has several different categories of membership, including Student Member, Individual Member, Registered Member MBACP, Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Accred) and Senior Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Snr Acccred).
Registered and accredited members are listed on the BACP Register, which shows that they have demonstrated BACP’s recommended standards for training, proficiency and ethical practice. The BACP Register was the first register of psychological therapists to be accredited by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA).
Accredited and senior accredited membership are voluntary categories for members who choose to undertake a rigorous application and assessment process to demonstrate additional standards around practice, training and supervision.
Individual members will have completed an appropriate counselling or psychotherapy course and started to practise, but they won’t appear on the BACP Register until they've demonstrated that they meet the standards for registration. Student members are still in the process of completing their training.
All members are bound by the BACP Ethical Framework and a Professional Conduct Procedure.
Accredited register membership
The Accredited Register Scheme was set up in 2013 by the Department of Health (DoH) as a way to recognise organisations that hold voluntary registers which meet certain standards. These standards are set by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA).
This therapist has indicated that they belong to an Accredited Register.

Additional information
I offer a free 15-20 minute introductory phone call. This gives us both an opportunity to get a sense of whether we may be a good fit, for me to share a little information about how I work, and for you to share as much (or as little!) information as you would like to about what has brought you to counselling.
