About me

It is daunting and confusing to look for the right therapist. When we are need to speak with someone, a list of profiles is the last thing we need to face. If you are looking at this profile now, the best I can assure you is that you will firstly get a chance to meet with me to decide whether I can be the right therapist for you. I feel that is the most important part of therapy is the therapeutic relationship and it is the client who will know what is best for them. My work is predominantly Person Centred and I work in a client - led style. I have gained my Diploma in Counselling from the University of Edinburgh and later Graduated with a Masters In Counselling. I have been in practice for nearly 17 years and in this time, I have worked with clients presenting a variety of issues such as anxiety, depression, stress, bereavement, self-esteem, domestic abuse, childhood sexual abuse, sexual abuse, childhood trauma, PTSD, Trauma, relationships, coping with long term illness, working though change, and parenting.

I have worked with both men and women from different ethnicities and am aware of and sensitive to issues of gender, race, ethnicity and cultural differences. I am aware of how these differences can impact the overall well-being of an individual and their personal circumstances. I can offer counselling in English, Hindi, Urdu and Punjabi. I have been trained from the Person-Centred and Psychodynamic modalities and I find them both useful tools to understand my clients better. I work according to the needs of my clients. I offer counselling on a one to one basis, however, for those who may find it more appropriate due to time or distance, I also offer counselling over the phone and online platforms.

Apart from my core training in counselling qualifications, I have also acquired basic training in Motivational Interviewing techniques, CBT (Cognitive Behavior Therapy) and Coaching. I am able to use them if needed in order to assist my clients’ exploration in therapy, however, the client’s needs and choice takes priority.

The therapeutic relationships at the heart of my work and endeavor to make my clients feel comfortable so that they can explore their issues. I believe provided the ideal conditions any individual has the potential to grow to the best of their ability and I try to offer that to my clients to the best of my ability.

Apart from counselling I have worked in the Voluntary Sector in a supporting capacity for a number of years and continue till date. Working for the betterment of individuals and offering a facilitative environment to empower is at the core of my practice.

I am based in Edinburgh city centre and have availability for Face to Face work. I also offer online and telephone counselling as an alternative to in person counselling.

Training, qualifications & experience

I am a Registered Accredited Member of the BACP (British Association of Counselling and Psychotherapy). and work according to their professional standards. I have experience of working both long and short term counselling. As a therapist, I have worked with various organisations/projects such as the Health In Mind (Edinburgh), Resolve (Edinburgh), The Rivers Centre (NHS Lothian, Edinburgh) and Future Pathways (Edinburgh). which has widened my capacity to work with various clients and their presenting issues. I have also worked as a Crisis Counsellor for the enquiry committee run by the Scottish Government for their investigations into child abuse.

In addition to offering one to one therapy, I currently work with the University of Edinburgh on the Counselling and Psychotherapy Professional Programmes. In the past I have been associated with Edinburgh University on the professional programs in various other capacities for a few years now prior to the teaching role, such as Professional Development Mentor for counselling and psychotherapy students (Diploma and PhD level). I have experience working both long and short term counselling. My experience of working with clients is wide. It runs from working with EAP (Employee Assistance Programs) services for organisations, counselling providing organisations and working with individuals in a private practice setting.

Registered / Accredited

Being registered/accredited with a professional body means an individual must have achieved a substantial level of training and experience approved by their member organisation.

BACP
British Association for Counselling & Psychotherapy (BACP)

BACP is one of the UK’s leading professional bodies for counselling and psychotherapy with around 60,000 members. The Association has several different categories of membership, including Student Member, Individual Member, Registered Member MBACP, Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Accred) and Senior Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Snr Acccred).

Registered and accredited members are listed on the BACP Register, which shows that they have demonstrated BACP’s recommended standards for training, proficiency and ethical practice. The BACP Register was the first register of psychological therapists to be accredited by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA).

Accredited and senior accredited membership are voluntary categories for members who choose to undertake a rigorous application and assessment process to demonstrate additional standards around practice, training and supervision.

Individual members will have completed an appropriate counselling or psychotherapy course and started to practise, but they won’t appear on the BACP Register until they've demonstrated that they meet the standards for registration. Student members are still in the process of completing their training.

All members are bound by the BACP Ethical Framework and a Professional Conduct Procedure.
