About me

Sharon Chapman is a counsellor; supervisor and trainer registered with British Association of Counsellors and Psychotherapists, (MBACP 146922), a member of The Association of Family Therapists and Systemic Practitioners (AFT 1549983) and is a Relate trained counsellor, trainer and supervisor.

“Therapy offers clients the opportunity to understand and reflect of their situation, think about what changes they would like to make and be supported to make those changes possible.”

I have over 20 year’s experience working with individuals, couples, families and young people with a wide range of difficulties. I have worked in adult and youth mental health services, Relate, schools and colleges. Alongside my private practice I currently work with young people living in residential care, also supporting carers, parents and staff.

I offer clients support for mental health concerns including anxiety and depression, angry behaviours and counselling for bereavement and loss, trauma and attachment difficulties. I can support recovery for survivors of child sexual and/or emotional abuse.

I specialise in relationship and family counselling (including coercive or abusive relationships), separation and divorce, family dynamics and parenting difficulties including challenging behaviour.

For young people I promote emotional and mental well-being; including understanding family relationships, parents who separate, family change, anxious behaviour, attachment difficulties, academic stress and self-harming.”

Counselling helps to see difficulties in a new light or come to understand and accept a situation which may feel impossible to manage on our own. Understanding ourselves and exploring new ways of feeling, thinking and behaving can enable us to shift unhelpful patterns of behaviour or come to terms with a difficult past or experience.

Finding the right counsellor is important; counselling supports you to explore your difficulties in a safe and non-judgemental space and is most effective when you develop a trusting and secure relationship with your therapist.

Is counselling Confidential and Safe?

Sharon Chapman offers private and confidential help to all clients. She will not give your name or any information from or about you to anyone unless she has reason to believe that someone, especially a child, is at risk of serious harm. In this case, whenever possible, you will be informed beforehand. This will be explained fully in your first session.

Family and Relationship Counselling: Our relationships are crucial to our happiness and when they are put under stress it impacts on every aspect of our lives. Relationship counselling can help if you’re trying to save your relationship, thinking about separating or coming to terms with a relationship that has ended. It can also be helpful if you are experiencing difficulties in a new relationship. Common difficulties include communication, arguments, trust, affairs, money, and parenting/step parenting.

Abusive or controlling behaviour are sometimes an issue for couples who come for help with their relationship. Current research and experience suggests that in this situation, working with both partners together may not be the best option. If this is so, Sharon will discuss at your session and you may be supported to attend individual specialist support.

Family Counselling helps families help each other. It enables family members to express and explore thoughts and emotions safely, to understand each other’s experiences and views, appreciate each other’s needs, build on strengths and make useful changes in their relationships and their lives.

Families and couples may be offered both individual and joint sessions to help them understand their difficulties and how to move forward.

Individuals who would like help with their family and /or couple relationships may also attend on their own. Sharon is able to offer counselling to all families and couples, irrespective of gender identity and sexual orientation.

How many sessions will I need?

Sharon offers an initial session to explore and understand your particular situation and what you would like to gain from therapy. Short term focused therapy usually with 6/8 sessions can be helpful for specific issues or difficulties; longer term counselling can help with more complex or challenging issues. Either way we will regularly review our progress together to ensure that you gain the most appropriate support.

Sessions are for 50 minutes and are generally weekly or fortnightly, usually at the same time, but can be flexible to accommodate your other commitments.

Where are the sessions?

Sharon sees private clients as an Associate Counsellor with Futureminds: Psychology and Consultation Service in Ashby De La Zouch, within walking distance of the town centre and with parking opposite.

Member organisations

BACP
British Association for Counselling & Psychotherapy (BACP)

BACP is one of the UK’s leading professional bodies for counselling and psychotherapy with around 60,000 members. The Association has several different categories of membership, including Student Member, Individual Member, Registered Member MBACP, Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Accred) and Senior Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Snr Acccred).

Registered and accredited members are listed on the BACP Register, which shows that they have demonstrated BACP’s recommended standards for training, proficiency and ethical practice. The BACP Register was the first register of psychological therapists to be accredited by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA).

Accredited and senior accredited membership are voluntary categories for members who choose to undertake a rigorous application and assessment process to demonstrate additional standards around practice, training and supervision.

Individual members will have completed an appropriate counselling or psychotherapy course and started to practise, but they won’t appear on the BACP Register until they've demonstrated that they meet the standards for registration. Student members are still in the process of completing their training.

All members are bound by the BACP Ethical Framework and a Professional Conduct Procedure.
