About me

Welcome to my profile, my name is Shamsa Aslam, and I am a qualified counsellor with experience of working with a diverse range of clients. In my professional practice, I embrace a person-centred approach, acknowledging and treating each client as a distinct individual and working at their pace. Sessions are personalised to target and address their specific needs and concerns. Knowledge of other approaches enables me to incorporate various techniques to aid the therapeutic process. Children and young people often thrive when engaging in a creative and enjoyable approach, which I've found to be highly effective in aiding their understanding and resolution of problems.

I am multilingual and offer counselling in Urdu, Punjabi, Mirpuri as well as English. Having worked specifically with the south Asian community, I have an excellent understanding of the culture and customs. My pervious role involved working closely with families and children from disadvantaged backgrounds, as well as refugees from different parts of the world.

I am a member of the British Association of Counsellors and Psychotherapists (BACP), a governing body for counsellors. I adhere to its ethical framework which ensures therapists work to a professional standard.

Member organisations

BACP
British Association for Counselling & Psychotherapy (BACP)

BACP is one of the UK’s leading professional bodies for counselling and psychotherapy with around 60,000 members. The Association has several different categories of membership, including Student Member, Individual Member, Registered Member MBACP, Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Accred) and Senior Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Snr Acccred). Registered and accredited members are listed on the BACP Register, which shows that they have demonstrated BACP’s recommended standards for training, proficiency and ethical practice. The BACP Register was the first register of psychological therapists to be accredited by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA). Accredited and senior accredited membership are voluntary categories for members who choose to undertake a rigorous application and assessment process to demonstrate additional standards around practice, training and supervision. Individual members will have completed an appropriate counselling or psychotherapy course and started to practise, but they won’t appear on the BACP Register until they've demonstrated that they meet the standards for registration. Student members are still in the process of completing their training. All members are bound by the BACP Ethical Framework and a Professional Conduct Procedure.

Further information

In counselling, you have a secure environment to express yourself openly, free from any judgment. I understand that the prospect of undergoing counselling for the first time or collaborating with a new counsellor can be intimidating. Therefore, my emphasis is on creating an environment where nervous clients can feel at ease and comfortable. I take pride in providing a warm, non-judgmental, and friendly space, allowing clients to explore difficulties in a safe and secure manner.

Clients often bring forth an initial issue, but through our discussions, additional underlying concerns often emerge. Together, we can collaboratively unravel and understand any emotions and feelings that may be causing you stress and discomfort.
