About me
As a fully qualified and experienced psychotherapist/counsellor I can provide you with a professional, friendly and confidential counselling service from my practice room in Edwinstowe, Nottinghamshire. You may be experiencing relationship or family difficulties, loss, anxiety, panic attacks, depression or loneliness. Work issues such as bullying, stress or pressures to perform may feel overwhelming. Or you may simply feel disconnected in a way that is hard to describe. Whatever your reason for seeing a counsellor I aim to provide a place where you feel comfortable to talk and to explore whatever is troubling you. Clients feedback that they find me a warm, energetic and approachable person - someone with whom they feel OK to tell their story and who they can both laugh and cry with.
There is free parking at Edwinstowe House. The location is easily accessible from Mansfield, Chesterfield, Ollerton, Retford, Worksop, Doncaster, Southwell and surrounding villages. I offer weekday appointments with flexible early and late appointments available to fit in with your life.
My therapy room is warm, comfortable and friendly. There is a relaxing view from the clients chair over Edwinstowe House's beautiful gardens. (See pictures below)
Certain counselling styles suit some people more than others so I draw from a range of approaches to provide the right support for you. I put great emphasis on our creating a strong trusting relationship but one which is respectful of your uniqueness and which acknowledges that you are the expert of your experiences.
I provide both short term counselling, where we can work through a specific problem, and longer term psychotherapy where deeper issues can be explored. We will review progress regularly ensuring your needs are being met.
Training, qualifications & experience
I have a Masters (MSc) in Person-Centred Psychotherapy and Counselling from the Sherwood Psychotherapy Training Institute (accredited through Coventry University) and I am a fully accredited Psychotherapist member of the United Kingdom Council of Counsellors and Psychotherapists. I am also a member of the British Association of Counsellors & Psychotherapists.
Prior to concentrating solely on my psychotherapy I worked for 25 years as a prosecuting solicitor supporting the interests of victims, particularly of sexual violence, in the criminal justice system. My motivation to become a psychotherapist stemmed from my desire to understand the experience of survivors of sexual abuse and to improve how the legal system supported them. I now enjoy directly supporting individual clients who have suffered abuse (which may have happened many years earlier) and helping them understand their own often confusing thoughts and feelings about sexual violence, and ultimately help them to move past the experience.
I worked for a large national organisation, spending 10 years as a senior manager which was very challenging on many levels and so I have a particular interest in workplace issues.
I am also very interested in our emotional connections to food, and how these can cause obesity, or leave us stuck in a yo-yo dieting cycle. I have undertaken specific training with Weight Wise to help people understand and take control of their emotional eating issues by exploring their history with food and learning to know what they are really hungry for.
I spent several years working voluntarily with the Nottinghamshire Hospice providing counselling to terminally ill patients and support to family members both before and after the bereavement. I have also worked voluntarily with APAS, counselling clients with gambling addictions
Together with a colleague I also run a training venture Inspire CPD for Therapists. We deliver a variety of predominantly online courses on a whole range of topics relevant to therapists of all levels of experience.
Member organisations
Being registered/accredited with a professional body means an individual must have achieved a substantial level of training and experience approved by their member organisation.
The UK Council for Psychotherapy (UKCP) is a leading professional body for the education, training and regulation of psychotherapists and psychotherapeutic counsellors. Its register is accredited by the government's Professional Standards Authority.
As part of its commitment to protect the public, it works to improve access to psychotherapy, to support and disseminate research, to improve standards and to respond effectively to complaints against its members.
UKCP standards cover the range of different psychotherapies. Registration is obtained by training or accrediting with one of its member organisations, or by holding a European Certificate in Psychotherapy. Accredited by the Professional Standards Authority.
Accredited register membership
The Accredited Register Scheme was set up in 2013 by the Department of Health (DoH) as a way to recognise organisations that hold voluntary registers which meet certain standards. These standards are set by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA).
This therapist has indicated that they belong to an Accredited Register.
