About me
Clinical Experience in Counselling and Psychotherapy
Hello. Thankyou for taking the time to view my profile.
I have been working as an individual and group therapist for 35 years, both in the private sector and in the NHS. I have considerable experience of working with people with a variety of emotional, relationship and identity problems. I provide both short term counselling and long term psychotherapy. As well as experience, I am empathic and approachable and I am available to help you through the challenges you are experiencing.
What to expect during Counselling, Psychotherapy
The first session is a chance for us to meet, for you to tell me what has brought you to therapy and for me to let you know the way I work. We can then decide if we feel we can work together (with no obligation to continue).
I use a combination of approaches in my work, drawing on a variety of interests, training and experience. The main theoretical grounding for my work is Transactional Analysis (TA). This approach includes us exploring and naming what you want from therapy. This is known as a contract or aims for therapy and can be specific and/or open depending on what you need. We can then work towards this contract in a collaborative way and over time you can let me know if what we are doing together is what you are needing.
For example, the contract might be a desire to process a significant loss, a greater understanding of the self or help in improving life through making healthy choices. This can include getting support to understand and change unhealthy behaviour patterns and to get to know and accept who you truly are. Depending on your needs the work can range from short term solution focused counselling, (drawing on Cognitive Behavioural Therapy aspects of my training) to long term psychodynamic orientated work.
I work with an underlying belief that people are essentially ok and that everyone has value, worth and dignity. In psychotherapy I see there is a focus on three areas: the influences of the past, understanding and dealing with current life experiences and what is happening between us as another way of understanding other relationships.
I see people weekly and the length of counselling or psychotherapy depends very much on the client and their needs.
Additional Information
As well as practicing as a psychotherapist I am also a qualified dramatherapist with over thirty years experience working with individuals and groups. From this training, and if the client is interested, I am experienced in working with your creativity, your story, metaphor, and the exploration of dreams.

school Registered / Accredited
Being registered/accredited with a professional body means an individual must have achieved a substantial level of training and experience approved by their member organisation.
The UK Council for Psychotherapy (UKCP) is a leading professional body for the education, training and regulation of psychotherapists and psychotherapeutic counsellors. Its register is accredited by the government's Professional Standards Authority.
As part of its commitment to protect the public, it works to improve access to psychotherapy, to support and disseminate research, to improve standards and to respond effectively to complaints against its members.
UKCP standards cover the range of different psychotherapies. Registration is obtained by training or accrediting with one of its member organisations, or by holding a European Certificate in Psychotherapy. Accredited by the Professional Standards Authority.
Accredited register membership
The Accredited Register Scheme was set up in 2013 by the Department of Health (DoH) as a way to recognise organisations that hold voluntary registers which meet certain standards. These standards are set by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA).
This therapist has indicated that they belong to an Accredited Register.
